HK display quit working

Riding along last night, minding my own business, and all of a sudden the display on my stock HK head unit went blank. Backlight still on, radio kept playing, but no display. Did some reading on this forum and on HDForums. Sounds like I could take it apart and try to fix it, but it's in warranty, so I guess I'm gonna take it in to the dealer.

Was planning to have Soundz Customz put in speakers and an amp on Thursday at Bike Week. Now I feel like I should wait until the head unit is fixed so HD doesn't think the mod caused the failure. Bad timing. Sucks.

Not all dealers but some will work with you . And I guess it has much to do with how you approach them mine went out twice once while stock and once after mods . Safest way is to let them do it while stock . But a call or face to face talk with service manager and tell them your plans and see what they say might go a long way . I have self installed custom audio from the head unit back self installed tuner pipe ac do my own service and they still give me no grief . I travel 90 or so miles each way to go to them because my local told me as I was about to sign the dotted line doing my own service would void warranty as well as using anything other than hd products .

Good luck which ever way you go and I hope they take care of you.

Similiar issue, could get headsup display to come back by either changing the display brightness or restarting bike (i.e. repower HK). Spoke with dealer who told me it could take 2 weeks to repair since they had to send HK to manufacturer. I said fine, pull the HU and give me the bike back..Then it was warranty only covers 1 fairing teardown and reinstall....long story short, short note to MOCO and dealer then pulled fairing to get HK serial number, put back together for me WITH HK still in, ordered replacement, 2 weeks later took bike in and they replaced HK. I picked up bike after HK replaced, rode home, tore HK out and put on shelf, installed a Sony. They also detailed bike last time they had it. Guess they didn't like the bad feedback I gave on dealer to MOCO. Damn accessories (T-shirts, bandanas, dog collars, cheese slicers, etc) area is larger than service, parts, and showroom floor put together.

BTW - be prepared, replacement units under warranty are refurbed units. Good luck.

My answer is pretty close to what has already been mentioned. I would take it by the service department, show it to them, let them know you need your bike, they should give you a date to bring it back..... they definitely don't fix radios, and as mentioned you will be getting a refurbished one. Then I would go have the new system installed, and when the other radio comes in from the dealer, once I see it's working, buy a good unit, and sell the HK on ebay......IJS.

Time to VENT: "we will cover the head unit but, not the speakers".. This might be my last trip to the Stealership. Then again what do ya expect from a company that builds and hypes up a new motor (120R) but, they dont warranty it ???? My bike is currently at the dealer for the exact same radio problem only since it started my right speaker decided to just die at the same time. According to the service writer " HD doesn't cover the speakers "...(Never mentioned anything about refurbed head unit, or 1 time fairing teardown) Then have the balls to tell me my ESP is ending, would i like to renew it, at $1400 for 2 years?........ @RGUrider: How do I get a straight phone line that leads to a live person @ MOCO? And does anyone have any idea how much the FLTRX series has gone up since removing it from HD's product line ? Im getting offers above $24,000, and thats from guys assuming its stock and has no upgrades ......

Big Moke...... I know this is going to sound funny, but if you do a lot of riding, don't work on the bike yourself, and don't plan any engine mods, I'd renew the ESP, trust me, it's not hard to run up a $600 or $700 bill at HD for what seems like nothing. I agree they should cover the speakers.... but they're probably doing you a favor, if you change those speakers to almost anything else you'll wonder why you put up with them so long.

I pulled my stock front speakers after a month. All they say for a brand is "China".the right one had already died, and when I went to warranty,no dealership had any, they'd have to order.Personally,I think they purposely use cheap speakers to get you to upgrade.they don't keep any stock ones for warranty, but they do have their aftermarket speakers.

A dealer 120 miles away had a new washboy when they warrantied my front tire, and after I stopped for fuel the radio quit.after
I saw soap suds come out of the fairing,it worked again, but lost the back light.

Point is,I think the entire stock sound system is of dubious quality anyway,I wonder if the new Rushmore system has quality issues as well?

wait,what was the question again?
