My Sony head unit is acting funny

Maybe some one can help me with this one? My volume is going up and down on its own. I used a Pacific Audio SWI-RC radio steering wheel control and it worked good for a little while. Now the volume is going up and down... it is a real nightmare. any thoughts?

Simple way to troubleshoot the problem, disconnect the control unit, if the problem stops, it's the unit, if not, then the radio has a problem.
