Speaker Clipping

New Install

Sony DSX-MS60
Rockford Fosgate PBR300x2
ZX654-100 6.50 4 OHM COMPONENT SPEAKERS

Amp gain set at 6
volts at 5
Hertz at 100

Speakers are cutting out when volume is turned up high at highway speeds.
I assume this is what is referred to as "clipping"
If I back the volume down it stops, but is not as loud as I thought it would be with the upgrade.

Any suggestions?

Check the connections, and you may need to adjust the gain on the amp down a little.

How did you hook up the amp ? Did you use the low level rca plugs or go with a high level hook up ?

2010 FLTRX , Stage 1, 13" Madstad, Mono tubes, SuperShox, Heritage style bars. Alpine CDE-HD149BT,Soundstream Picasso Nano Series PN4.520 , 5X7 and 6.5 Infinity Kappa speakers

I used the RCA plugs from the HU to the AMP input.

But I was reading the RF amp instructions again and it says "when the installation requires a High Level(speaker) input, the RCA harness needs to be cut on the wire side of the Y-splitter. discarding the RCA's and wiring the wires directly to the HU.

The low level hook up is better if you have that option. I was not sure about your sony. If you hooked the amp up the high level way the the HU speaker wires dub as remote power (in)and the remote power (in) on the the amp turns into a remote( out) for adding additional equipment.
Sinse you use low level input , this isn't your problem.

I got my amp's gain set between 4 & 5 and can turn the volume all the way up , adjusting base only . I'm still running the HK HU and the older Hogtune 5x7 speakers.

If you are using an aftermarket head unit def use the RCA cables. Not sure if the Rockford amp has a switch like the Arc Audio amp to select hi or low input. Make sure it is on low if it does have one and you are using the RCA's. Next you will probably want to turn the crossover frequency up a little bit. 100 hz is a little low. At low to mid volume it will be fine but once your moving down the road you will want more vocals and highs and the 100 hz setting will let those play into distortion and cause the clipping you are getting. set your setting on the head unit to flat first and then gain the amp. Turn the volume up then turn the gain til the speakers are about maxed out then back the gain down a little. After that you can kind of fine tune the sound with the setting on the radio after that. Hope it helps.

The RF amp has a switch that can be set to High Pass, All Pass or Low Pass. Mine is set to HP. There is also a frequency dial that can be set from 50-500hz. I believe the last time I set it, it was at about 100hz (been tweaking this thing for several weeks). The HW speaker instructions give a "typical amp settings" set up of 75-200hz, HP, and gain 1/2-3/4 up.

I had a friend of mine, who used to own a car stereo shop, adjust the HU last week and he fine tuned the HU and got it go to a much higher volume without clipping. But the fairing was on, so he couldn't make any amp adjustments. It's close just not where I think it should be.

I don't have the RF amp, But when I had Iron Cross put front pre outs on my HK last month, they asked what amp I was using.

They said if you are using the RF amp to go with High level inputs, not the RCA connection. I have heard others say this as well. For some reason the RF does;t like the RCA connections.

everyone keeps saying the PBR doesn't do well with the RCA inputs. I just done have this problem. My alpine has 4 volt pre amps, many top end head units have 5 volt preamps. My buddies Kenwood has over 5 volt preamps.

I have notices lots of Sonys only have 2 volt preamps. Could this be why the PBR doesn't do so good. Lots of head units out there only have 2 volt preamps.
