display not working on HK head unit

Well, I see this isnt anything new with these head units. So now its time to upgrade apparently.

Looking for some opinions on what I should do. Should I scrap the entire system? Or will a change in the head unit improve anything(sound quality wise)

Probably try to replace the head unit and see how I like that. Then make changes from there if need be.

I have all the upgrades possible from Harley. Amp, upgraded fairing speakers, and Ipod interface.

Prefer something weather resistant. And something that will work with the hand controls. USB would also be nice. Please help.

Yes an aftermarket HU will sound better and have more bells & whistles. I dont think they look as good as the stock HU . If you ride in the weather get a marine unit and a splash guard.
You can also repair your display on your head unit yourself. Someone had a thread on it here not to long ago. It looked like a simple procedure just about anyone could do.

If I have to explain ,you wouldn't under stand anyway.

Did you just wash the bike or ride the bike while it was raining??? The HK head unit is about the most weather proof system available that I know of but sometimes it can get too wet and it will effect the display. If the background light is working and the display isn't then wait until the unit drys out and everything will be good.
If the display just stoped working you could send the radio in to Iron Cross Audio for repairs www.ironcrossaudio.com.
Most aftermarket radios are not as weather proof as the stock unit but many people have gone to them and they are happy.

If you plan on purchasing an aftermarket unit give Iron Cross Audio a call. My wife's aux port wasn't working on her HD unit and they bought it for $180. It was easier than trying to sell a defective unit. If its just the display and no other damage such as moisture they might make you an offer. If you decide on an aftermarket and you want to see your display during daylight get a marine unit. Because of the angle the RG stereo mounts it makes it difficult to see. My aftermarket sounds much better than the HD unit. I can't see the screen during daylight and have just dealt with it. There are also more options such as the USB you mentioned. Good luck in your decision and search.

I had the same problem on my streetglide at about 20,000 miles. I pulled the head unit, undid a couple of screws and removed the face. Bend the pins out so they make a better connection. It was still working perfectly when I traded it at over 50,000 miles. Here's a link to the instructions I followed. It's actually pretty easy.

Thanks for the link, but I'm not looking to repair it. Just wanna try a new HU and probably replace the rest of my system as money allows.. Just as everyone on here has stated....The hd audio is junk!

Just looking for insight on what I could replace with....that is pretty easy install, and will work with the rest of my stuff(for now).

I have a biketronics 2180 amp and 7.1" speakers in the fairng and 6.5" in the lowers and they sound pretty good. A buddy has the same setup with a Sony HU and it sounds significantly better. I had an Arc Audio KS 125.2 amp and Polk MM651s on my Streetglide and it sounded just about as good as the anp and 7.1s I have in the fairing now which is something to consider since it was significantly less money. The 2 extra speakers in the lowers do make a huge difference. I'll be adding an aftermarket HU at some point. Probably the Alpine 149bt or similar.

If you're looking into an aftermarket I suggest following rg_dave's advice. Repair the HD unit and sell it for at least $300. This will help you with the cost of aftermarket unit, speakers and handlebar controller. I would suggest getting a unit with Bluetooth.

Well there are different opinions on that. The HD stock speakers are not that good IMO and I don't know about the new BOOM speakers from HD.
On the other side of the coin you only hear about Harman Kardon HU problems no one post if they don't have problems.
If you ask J&M they will tell you that HK HU is the radio they recommend for the touring bike.
I have the same HK HU in my 2008 that came with the bike when I rolled it off the showroom floor when the bike was new and my HK HU has never been repaired and it has worked flawlessly.
I do know that anything that is electronic can have problems and I bought a reconditioned HK HU from a forum member a few years back as a spare but I never used it but when my HU goes out I just swap out HU and send the bad HU out for repairs.

Thanks for the link! I have a buddy's HK head unit sitting in my garage. He was having the same problem with his and replaced it. I got him to donate it to me since I wanted to disect it to find out what LED's I needed to get to change the lighting from Stock orange/red to Blue.

I hadn't started yet, but when I saw your link, it showed me how easy it was to disassemble. Now I've checked it out and will be ordering my LEDS and I'll fix the display while I'm in there. That will give me a spare head unit. I like that idea. I'll probably do the LED upgrade on that one first, so I can just swap out the board, then do the LED upgrade on my display later.

Thanks!
