Inner Fairing Speaker install help

Trying to install some JBL GTO638 6.5-Inch in my inner fairing.
I have removed my fairing to do this task.
I did a mock up on a piece of 1/4" plywood, just to get some practice before cutting into my fairing!

Here's the issue. I cannot get the speaker cover to sit nice and flat against the surface of the plywood.
There is a 3/16" gap.

Attached is a picture of the 2 mounting brackets that came with the speaker. I've been trying with the thinner metal bracket.

Anybody else run in to this Issue?

I have quit trying for this evening.

Those rings look like ones you'd use in a vehicle. I'd just mount them up to your bike w/out those rings...
