marine head units

If replacing the HK head unit why would you not replace with a marine rated unit. I know there are probably better non marine rated units out there, but is it not a big gamble to spend a couple hundred dollars on a high end unit ,for it only to be ruined by water. They also look as though they are built to withstand harsher conditions such as weather ,bumps, and vibrations. I am just trying to figure out what's best, all opinions or facts welcome...thanks

I've been using a non marine unit for 3 years now, been through a few down pours and many washes, no problems yet. If they made a marine unit that looks good and has all the same features I may try it, but even if I had to replace mine now, I paid around $150, so for $50 a year it's well worth it.

I had the same worries you did. But everyone here swore they've had nearly zero problems with water and the head unit. At least nor more problems than they've had with the HK.. sometimes stuff just happens.

But my bike sat outside while it rained about 3-4 inches overnight. Not one issue. And that was high winds and wicked rain.

You absolutely don't need to spend a couple hundred dollars on a decent Head Unit. Pioneer-Alpine-Kenwood- Just to name a few, offer good Radios with nice features starting around $140 and up. I only paid $135 for my Pioneer and it will beat the pants off the stock Harley Radio..Not to say the stock Radio is bad--It just doesn't have a lot of features like an EQ, Crossover, Pre-outs and so one that you can get in an aftermarket Unit, Without spending a Fortune. Add a simple Radio Cover from Biketronics for 20 bucks and you wont have to worry about it when it Rains. And just because it says "Marine Grade" Doesn't mean its totally waterproof. Do a search on People complaining how there HD Radios wont start or Wont light up after getting soaked while washing there bikes. I'll never get a Marine Radio.........

Radios are like everything else on these bikes it's about what your needs are just like all your mods. I do have a marine head unit paid the same as most non marine units. Will it last longer? When your putting electronics out in the weather it's a gamble 1 storm 100 storms you never know!!!

I bought the Sony DSX-MS60 because I liked the fact that it held my Ipod inside the unit, but I found I wanted to use Pandora more than my ipod so I switched to a non marine unit Alpine 149BT. Will wait to see how it goes.

Sony was a great working stereo though, it did not need to be replaced except the lack of pandora.

I bought a sony marine unit about 2 years ago and the first rain storm I got caught in it went to shit. Would randomly change songs and the volume wouldn't work. After that I went with a non marine kenwood unit but added the vtwin audio splash guard and haven't had any issues.
