Question Problem - HELP! Radio won't turn on.

Hey all,

Over the winter, I installed two Hawg-Wired RS400 amps and matching speakers for the front and rear. Running one amp for front pair, one amp for rear pair. I've had them in for several months - been riding around...no problems. Finally decided to wash the bike over the weekend. I noticed after I washed the bike that the speakers were on even though the radio was not. They just had a faint hiss. This was all 4 speakers ... not just the front or just the rear ... all 4. I turned the bike on, radio played like normal. Started the bike...no problems. Turned it off...still hissing. Weird, right? So I decided I'd just leave it overnight. Maybe it was a moisture issue from washing the bike...but I've never had an issue before these installs. I'm still using the factory HD radio and I added the iPod control and mounted an iPod in the saddlebag.

Tonight...I go out to check the bike out. Not hissing. Good...or so I thought. I turned the ignition on...no radio. Started the bike - the battery was weak, but it started. Still no radio. I checked the radio fuses in the main panel and both appear to be ok. I'll confirm with multimeter shortly. I also checked the iPod and it doesn't appear to be charging. My guess is the radio itself has a fuse somewhere? Maybe that tripped? Suggestions welcome as I try to track this down. I'm doing what I can without pulling the fairing first. Any thoughts out there? Both Hawg-Wired fuses (under the seat) are still good (30A fuses). At a loss on what might be triggering this response from the Big Blue Pearly One.

Thanks,
G

Did you check the fuse for the amps?

I checked the main fuses for the amps under the seat, but not the fuses on the body of the amps. Trying to eliminate options OUTSIDE the fairing first...but I think it's inevitable that I'm going in. Ha

Thanks,
G

I believe the fuse for the radio is labeled something else.
Did you check all the 15amp fuses.

Honestly though kinda sounds like the amp is on even without the radio. Nevermind you said it has been installed for months

Was the HK aux port buttoned up during the wash?

Agreed...sounded like the amp was on without the radio...meaning something in the relay for the radio was flaky. I checked every fuse I had access to (outside the fairing) ... even made sure all the lights functioned. It's traced down to the radio at this point, but I don't remember there being a fuse on the back of the HK unit. The iPod is not charging either. Wondering if that is driven by the HK unit as well. I'd hate to have to replace that damn thing ... they aren't cheap.

Yes...aux port was buttoned up.

Only other thing I can think of is...I had the faceplate LEDs modified by Marty. It's been shining nice and blue without issue, though. I'd imagine the radio would function without the faceplate working, right? Just wouldn't display?

Pulling the fairing next...keep coming with the suggestions.

Cheers,
G

OK, outer fairing is off. I checked the fuses on both amps - both still fine. That doesn't explain the situation. I see no evidence of moisture in the fairing. All connections are solid. Amps are still well grounded. When I turn the ignition on, they do not power up, though. They are looking for high level input from the radio. Since the radio is not turning on...the amps aren't either. I'm at a loss here. Suggestions?

I was able to use the eject feature of the radio to get a CD out of the deck, but still nothing else. So there is power at the deck.

Is there a factory reset command to reset the radio?

Thanks,
G

give it time to dry out. depending on your local climate it might take a day or two.

ONG ...if they come out with the 15 RG...I might. Otherwise...sticking it out with the RGU.

Chromedome...I'm a rider in all types of weather...can't always wait for it to dry. Need to know why this happened so I can prevent it. Planning Laconia next week, Sturgis in August and SWIV...can't afford "dry time". Up north...I ride if the roads aren't frozen.

FURTHER CLARIFICATION - radio does not even boot to the HD screen. Nada!

Cheers,
G
