Question New deck and install kit

Hi all,

Been a while, hope everyone is getting some riding in while the weather is good.

My stock receiver in my RG stopped working, after 103,000KM I can't really complain.

In looking for ways to get a new deck I found many options available but not a lot of reviews, good or bad.

I ended up going with a Kenwood receiver (KMR-355U) and have ordered a Scosche intstall kit and Pac control unit (thumb controls) from 702 Motoring in Vegas. FYI, I was able to get all this for about $250, the dealer wanted over $1,300 for a new receiver. It's going to take a couple of weeks to get here and of course I'm still looking at different options and finding 'new and better' all the time.

What I'm looking for is some feedback, good or bad, with the combination I've chosen, suggestions/helpful hints for the install, or anything else you might be able to add.

Also, even though it is a marine receiver, does anyone know if there is a splash gaurd that will work with the Scoshe kit?

Thanks,
Stephen

Stephen, I recommend to you the thread here that I created on my head unit install. I chose a Pioneer "Media Center" that has half the depth of head units with CD players. I listen to Pandora and my music on my iPhone.

Like you I also chose the Scosche HD7000B and PAC-SWI-RC to integrate the head unit to the handlebar controls. My Scosche HD7000B interface between the PAC and Pioneer did not work out of the box as advertised because of manufacturer's production errors in wiring. Crutchfield gave me contradictory directions for a week, wasted 40 hours of my time with incorrect directions, then finally agreed with my first assertion that the Scosche HD7000B was wired incorrectly and I needed a replacement. Instead of replacing the unit they gave me yet more instructions on how to rewire the unit so it would work as advertised. It now does work as advertised.

So my advice to you is that if your Scosche HD7000B is not a simple plug and play - you should be running in two minutes - then consider that you like I are stuck with one from the production batch that were wired incorrectly.

Regarding splash guard, some have recommended one for $20. I will leave that to them to do so. I have another less elegant and less expensive plan.

Thanks Bull_Duck! I had read part of your thread the other day, it helped with my confusion. I'm not at the point the I use a thumb drive, but I do have a couple of CD's with MP3 format on them that I listen to, and my phone is still a flip phone. I do like Pandora but unfortunately it isn't available in Canada. Yet.

Seems that it was all just a wiring issue, which is what I'm worried about. Hopefully the unit I'm getting is from the 'fixed' period, not prior.

Just so I'm clear, the handlebar controls will work without progamming the SWI? I've looked at several different sets of instructions and am wondering if I have to program anything since I have no infra-red control?

Again, thanks.

Stephen

You do need to "program" the SWI. Program is not like Fortran, COBOL or C#. It is merely setting the dial on the side to 7 and the button on the other side to three clicks. Easy. Then proceed in the sequence given for each control such as volume up, down, etc. That is it. There is a good YouTube video showing this. I will try to find the URL. I watched that and contacted Crutchfield and said "look at this, w.t.f.!" I was told by Crutchfield technical support that each motorcycle is different, and the unit is very sensitive to ...." Bla bla bla. What personality is my bike? Bottom line, if it is not plug and play as in the video I will provide the link to, then .... Xx&$#% .... No ..., be very polite and insist on a return.

BTW, accepted a job that required that I move to Canada. I lived in the Hamilton/Toronto area for a decade. Loved Canada - though originally from Los Angeles. Another succession of jobs got me to Florida - the most populous Canadian Province/State.

Here it is

There is no difference between programming for a Harley vs a car other than setting the dial at seven, with version three. Easy ... And if it is not, you have one of the infamous manufacturing defects.

Post your success, trials and tribulations here.

Don't be so sure abou tthe vintage thing, I didn't start until I was 32. Kind of a late bloomer.

Hey guys...I just got the Scorche & PAC units with a Sony marine deck. I pulled the wiring harnesses out and sat and looked at them for almost 1hr then gave up, wiring diagrams aren't my strong suite :-)

Anyway...reading your posts, I think you're saying I should be able to plug the Scorche harness directly into the PAC unit..or did I read that wrong? That mess of wires and resistors has me wanting to run far away from doing this, please tell I don't need them. If I do need them where can I find a simple diagram, does one exist *anywhere*?

I've put a lot of the PAC modules in cars and let me tell you they aren't the most reliable. The resistors, programming, and wiring is all a pain. Not to mention it losing its programming. I don't know what you paid for it or if you can return it but the Hawg wired adapter is 4 wires from the radio to it and plug in the factory harley plug, set the 4 dip switched to the brand radio and its done. No cutting not resistors. I've had mine in for 2 years and never had an issue. IMO well worth the $150 for not having to mess with it!
