Yet another RF PBR300X2 and Infinity Kappa 62.11i Thread!

Hello fellow Road Gliders. Forgive me for starting yet another one of these, but I am new to the Road Glide world. I am new to touring bikes in general, so I am a bit of a noob. I am not afraid to solder or splice, but I have never removed the fairing of a motorcycle before and don't want to destroy anything on my beautiful bike.

Questions are as follows (I have 2015 Road Glide Special):

1) Based on my research here, Infinity Kappa 62.11i seem to be the way to go in the stock position. Am I right here?

2) I hear that the Hawgwired speaker adapters work for this implementation? Does someone have a link to the right one?

3) The RF PBR300X2. I don't plan on adding additional speakers for a long time, so I am fine with a 2 channel amp. At 2 ohms, this should give me all the power I need. Problem is I live and ride in Texas. I hear this baby has heat issues. Is there any air flow in the 2015 RG fairing? Are certain mounting positions better than others?

4) For the amp, what wiring adapters/power adapters do I need? Again, I am a noob.

5) Speaker grills. Will the stock ones fit on? Do I need another set?

6) Is there a tutorial already put together on how to do all of this on a 2015 RG? If not, I would be happy to take a ton of pictures and create one.

7) Finally, will I need to flash the amp or head unit when I am done? Also are there recommended gain settings for the PBR and any volume restrictions to ensure I don't tear up these speakers?

Thanks in advance for the help. I have been asking on "the other" forum as well, but it is great to get an RG specific take on the world.

I can help with a few of you questions!

The fairing comes off very easy, first remove your windshield, next take the upper vent housing off it just snaps down, the blinker/marker light connections are right at the top of the fairing running down disconnect those, next take your speaker grills off the snap/clips are on the inside of the grill/bike I use a 90* pick slide it under the grill & lift gently, remove the torx screws in the speaker holes, remove torx screws holding air deflectors, the the allen screws at blinkers, fairing will come off!
The Infinitys have great reviews!
I'm pretty sure you don't need adapters for the Infinitys, I'm not using them on my JL's!
Stock grills should work, again I'm not running the same speaker but they fit over my JL's!
V-Twin has some nice wiring kits that could help you along!
You will need to have the dealer flash your head unit, I'm not sure what flash you'll need!
I don't have any expierience with that amp!
Take your time & have fun!!!!

I am pretty new to the RG world and plan to do the same setup and can answer a couple of your questions. The speakers are a direct replacement with no adapters needed. I have also read that there is no flash necessary unless you are adding more speakers but I'm only 99.9% sure about that. As far as removing the outer fairing it is pretty easy. I did it once and got the instructions on the forum but can't remember excactly which fasteners to remove. I will be staying tuned into this thread as I have more questions than answers.

I'm in the process of an amp and speaker install on a 2015 RGS.
RF T400X2ad amp and Infinity Kappa 62.11i speakers

The RF PBR300X2 and those Kappas are the most recommended bang for buck amp/speaker combo.

1) You may or may not have clearance issues with the stock speaker grilles and these speakers. Myself, I ran into problems, but I have also read where others installing them did not. If you do it is not something you can not work around.

2) On a RGS with the 6.5 system, the only place in the fairing to mount an amp is under the HU. You will see when you open it up that there is no room anywhere else. You will have to figure out a way to mount your amp. Fabricate a plate, a bracket, something.

3) The outer fairing removal on these new RGs is a simpler process than on previous models. The installation of the outer fairing is MUCH simpler, more forgiving, and a better design than before.

4) When adding an amp you will need a dealer flash or a Magic Box. I have read too many comments on issues with the box so I will be doing the dealer flash. Not sure which flash it is but I believe it is 8 speakers active and amp 1 and 2 off . (I am sure someone else will chime in on this).

5) I do not believe adapter rings are needed for 6.5 fairing speakers on any of the Rushmore models

6) As far as amp wiring, you will need an amp installation kit. You can buy much cheaper ones but if you go with a genuine RF installation kit (RFK10) it will add a year to your amp warranty.

7) There are no tutorials so to speak but there are plenty of qualified folks on these forums that are more than willing to help you out with any questions or problems you might encounter.

Awesome answer and very helpful. Thank you.

Don't have it done yet. Sent amp out to a guy on another forum for testing.

I am taking pictures as I go and will post them on my install thread here when I get it all completed.

Ganooch,

I think this will be the same exact setup I go with on my bike! Many of your questions are questions that I have too. Have you done the install yet? What wiring harness are you going with (or are you doing the wiring yourself)?

I'm ready to pull the trigger and get the amp and speakers any day now.

As far as removing the fairing, I recommend you invest the $60.00 or so in a factory service manual. It will give precise instructions on how to remove and reinstall the fairing as well as a ton of other useful information you're gonna need if you remain on this forum for any length of time! It will be the absolutely best investment you will ever make while you own this bike, Guaranteed!

I will be installing this system over the weekend. I will take several pics and try to post a "how I did it" write-up. From the info I have gathered the only factory wiring I may have to "modify" would be the stock speaker wires. I am far from an audio expert but since this RF/Infinity combo is so popular maybe I can give others out there the info they need to do it. It's actually a pretty simple job and the only thing I don't know yet is exactly how I am going to mount the amp.

I did my install today and took several pics but for some reason none of them saved on the camera. The only pic I have is of the spot under the radio where I installed the amp. I will include that pic and should be able explain the rest. It is a pretty easy install.

- Remove outer fairing, seat, gas tank, and stock speakers.
- Remove the 4 allen head screws on top of the radio in each corner and lift the radio up so the screen is facing the ceiling. I didn't unplug anything from the back of the radio.
- Pull the stock speaker wires back through to the inside of the fairing and cut the terminals off the end of the wires. Strip a 1/2" of insulation from the 4 ends and splice them onto the harness that came with the amp. It will plug into the input side of the amp. This is the only splicing of factory wiring necessary.
- Run a 10ga power (fused) wire and 10ga ground wire from the battery along the backbone of the frame and up to the space under the radio. I used an RF amp install kit that came with power wire and remote wire. It also comes with a ground wire but it is too short to reach the battery so I had to go buy one.
- I tapped into the positive terminal of the 12v accessory plug on the lower left side of the fairing with the remote wire and ran it up to the space under the radio.
- The power, ground, and remote wire all plug into the amp as will be painfully obvious when you have it in front of you.
- The amp come with a second harness that plugs into the output side of the amp and connects to your speaker wires (supplied by you) and run through the bottom of the speaker enclosures and up to where the speakers mount.
- Connect wires to the speakers and install. I had to buy mounting screws that were 1/4" longer than the stock screws since the mounting flange is thicker on the Infinity's.
- The 1 pic I included shows where the amp mounts. I used velcro to stick the amp to the flat metal plate that has the 2 oval shaped holes you see in the pic. The pic was taken from the front of the bike just above the headlights. The amp drops down in the space from the top where the radio was and sits with the back of the amp against the plate so the top of the amp faces forward. The velcro seems to hold the amp well but it could be attatched with screws if desired.
- Before mounting amp to the plate plug in all your connections and install the fuse in the power wire. Make the adjustments on the amp according to the directions. Once your happy with the settings mount the amp to the plate. Once you mount the amp you will not be able to access the adjustments unless you dismount it.
- Put the radio back in place and install the 4 screws.
- Put bike back together and enjoy!

I am far from a professional installer and these are definitely not detailed instructions so please keep that in mind if and when you decide to use them. I am sure I left out some details and the install could be done more professionally but I am happy with the results. If you wanted to go back to stock all you would have to do is install some terminals on the original speaker wires and feed them back to their original location. Hope this helps anyone considering this install.

Would that install location interfere with an xm module that mounts on top of the radio on a 2012?

#18 ·
The 2015 & 2012 Radios and compartment setup are completely different, on the 2015 the XM module plugs into the back of factory radio, and the only part that sticks out is the connector for the ant.

I did a similar swap as 9th just used a 300x4 and some kicker speakers I had for a previous bike project. Did the same install and went off without a hitch, gotta say though I don't think that amp boulder move if it had to with all that wiring wedged in there. Performs extremely well without the flash but the gain only at 5. I'm psyched to get the flash and install speakers in my lower fairings

I did this upgrade, almost exactly. Rockford PBR300x4 amp, Infinity Kappas, and cyclesounds magic box to clean up the DSP from the head unit. The problem I have is that the Infinity's have a lot of distortion at the lower volume levels, especially in the mid-bass range. It seems like the woofer cant move properly due to the small speaker enclosures. Anyone else have the same results? I should also mention I had the same distorted sound with no amp, directly connected to the head unit.

Bringing this post back with a question. I have basically the same install (PBR300X2 and 1 set of 6.5" Kappas) and have the same distortion (bass) at low levels. I did do the radio flash recommended by J&M and its now louder, but still have the low level distortion issue. Did you ever get it figured out?

Any with this set up remember about where they set the amp level, I have mine about 7 and sound great in the garage, on the road not sure if it is any louder than before, don't want to blow up anything turning up the amp to much. Also set on HP and cant remember where the crossover level is set but had to adjust as the treble was so high.

Definitely not LP. If you dont find the answer here, try the audio section on HDForum. Alot to read over there. Good Luck!

Here you go. Took info on the other forum,

***** installed pbr300 with magic box last night
So far so good will be taking it for a ride this week to road test it

Gotta say Ed from cycle sounds helped me setup the amp over the phone last night. Good guy

Can't wait to test this on the road

My setup pbr300x2 ,Harley boom audio speakers 6.5 , magic box , cycle sounds amp install kit, and cycle sounds plug and play speaker connectors so there's no cutting of the stock harness

Gain set to 7 freq **** in the middle and amp set to high pass. Bass in the middle treble 2 bars higher than the middle.

As I use it I will post more

Thank you
