Why change out the HK unit?

I see that a lot of you are changing out the stock HK radio. Is it such a bad radio? I just want to be able to control my ipod and not spend a lot. But if the HK one doesn't sound as good as an after market one while keeping the stock speakers I would consider changing it out. Also the HK is linked to the ECM isn't it? Just trying to decide which way to go.

It seems that the stock unit is junk heard of several being covered under warrenty.and to replace it out of pocket its best to go with a aftermarket system head unit amp and speakers for the same $$$ or less then just the stock head unit.I just figured its not if it was when so replaced it,didnt want to be with out my tunes.just my .02$

For me, I mostly wanted the ability to control the ipod / usb device.

I didnt dislike the HK, but figured if I was going to spend the extra coin on the ipod controls I might as well sell the stocker and buy the sony with the device storage built in. Other feathers like XM & BT will be in my next one.

Mine reasoning is a little different. If it still works keep it . When it does finaly go, sure i will replace it with probaly Sony . But till then and my system sounds pretty good , guess it will better when i stick a new head unit in

Re: Why change out the HK unit?

I wanted more versatility and better sound quality, the only thing I sometimes miss about the HK is the WB, and I have an app that takes care of that.

This is the exact reason I switched. I also went with the Sony with storage tray.

This is what I have been told and I think is true upon my own experience. The HK unit is a descent enough unit, but it is set for highs only. You will never get good mids out of it, let alone any bass. Hence the distortion at higher volume with speakers that are trying to produce the mids and highs. It was one of the best mods I have done to my bike, and I have done alot to my bike.
For what you can sell the stock HK unit for on ebay you can buy your new head unit and the biketronics retro fit set-up to still be able to use your handcontrols.

Thanks guys. Still don't know what direction I'm going in. Talked to Biketronics and for around 400 I can change head units and for 600 I can change H/U and upgrade to the titan II's.

I would probably get aftermarket if mine ever crapped out, but i really dont want to lose the auto volume control. I replaced the head unit on 1 of my cars that originally had the AVC and i really do miss it.

The biketronics unit has AVC built into it, so you don't lose anything
