Head unit removal

I want to remove the infotainment unit from my bike. All of my audio needs are are taken care of from my iPhone. I will be placing my amp that was installed in my saddlebag, inside the fairing where the factory head unit is now. I will be going with a bluetooth volume/track control setup, which has always worked best for me in the past.
My question is, is there anything special that I need to do as for as dead ending any wires/connections that plug into the unit when I remove it?
I was also wondering if people buy infotainment head units?
Thanks for any and all feedback.

If it is a Rushmore model, do you have a regular Road Glide or a Special?

This info would help you sell the unit. If your bike is a Special, there may be folks looking to upgrade from the standard radio that comes with a standard Road Glide or Streetglide. The upgrade from Harley isn't cheap!

All wiring from the infotainment unit will end in plugs. Tape them off to keep them clean and dry, shouldn't be any problems. You will lose a couple of "info" capabilities such as oil pressure and air temperature and the ability to turn on or turn off your EITMS system as the screen is how this information is communicated from the ECM. You could always install an aftermarket oil pressure guage, no a problem there. I would default the EITMS to "on" before removing the unit, that way you have the option to use it.

To retrofit the infotainment units backwards to model 98-13 bikes is difficult at best, it probably be done but the wiring plugs are different and it would involve a lot of fitting into the old inner fairing setup to make it work.

The bike is a 17 roadglide special. What would a fair price for the unit be?

Like new units range from $700 to $1050. Although the guy that has been selling factory takes offs and charging over a grand for them last year hasn't been moving many of them lately (not here - over at another Harley forum). Fair going prices now are ranging in the $700 to $800 dollar range if you want to move it fast here or on another forum.

You could probably get a little more through eBay, but then you have to deal with their BS... seller fees, thieves or buyers that claim something is wrong with the item you sold them. Depending on where you live you might be able to Craigslist it as well.

Take a piece of Styrofoam push the ends into it and tape it off.
