talk to me about wireless comms

i hope this is in the right place, seemed like there were several places it could go...

okay, so the wife and i are looking into getting bluetooth comms for our bikes. she rides her own. we both have 2019 road glide specials with the boombox gts system. right now, we do not already own any bluetooth comms setups so we're starting from scratch. because of this, we are looking at the whim, and the hd branded sena 20s system. mostly for the ease of plug and play, and not having to do any creative workarounds. understand that the non hd sena systems will play in mono vs. stereo when utilizing the whim.

some of my concerns are when we are local and not using the headsets. will we still be able to use apple CarPlay and have the output come out of the speakers? i've read where people are taking their headsets, turning them on, and then tossing them into the saddlebag. is that necessary? right now, we have the workaround where the gts has been flashed for the whim, without the whim being installed, so we have apple CarPlay, only without the mic functions.

so, in short, i don't know what i don't know. and am i going about this wrong? i don't necessarily want to be able to carry on phone conversations while riding, but i would like to be able to have comms with the wife, and take emergency calls if necessary. i really like the 'hacked' CarPlay, but occasionally find the lack of a mic a shortcoming.

can y'all hook us up?

I understand the concept of reality, but find it too confining for a way of life.

Good luck in your search for the Holy Grail. Even though itís not compatible with the Harley system, I went with the Cardo Packtalk Bold with the upgraded JBL headset. I find it easy to link with others, has good sound quality and is waterproof.

It doesnít work if plugging the phone into the USB port on the right side. I get my power from the power port on the left side and put the phone in the left side storage compartment - with a little bit of cord showing.

There are a lot of good choices out there. A suggestion, decide if you want to hear stereo or mono. If stereo, than only HD branded headset will provide that and their new 30k headset is pretty good. If mono is ok: Sena naturally has it as well, J&M has a pretty good setup as well and the setup mentioned above. There will be many other suggestion provided by our forum, good luck in whichever way you go.

I can only tell you about the ones I own and have experience with. I had the Sena 10, loved them but decided to upgrade to the 30, love them also and definitely an improvement over the 10. Started having a problem earlier this spring where they would just stop communication, (started right after a firmware upgrade), have done resets and even went back to the earlier version firmware, but the problem would still pop up once in awhile. My wife wasnít happy, and we got a chance to get the Cardo with JBL for around $300 for the double set. We were getting ready to go on a trip, so decided to try them. Sound quality and noise canceling on the Cardo is definitely better, but the quality of build and ease of operation belong to Sena. Both are great, if I had to choose one with the Sena working properly, price would probably be the biggest factor. Hope this helps.

Wife and I use Sena units. Weíve had SMH 10 and now 20s Evos. Theyíve been rock solid. Iíve got a 17 RGS and have thought about adding the WHIM or Freewire. Iíve come to the opinion that either would only give me the ability to use voice commands, which Iíve lived for two years without. That or the ability to easier move music from the speakers to the helmet or vis a versa. That hasnít reached my value threshold yet.

so comparing the 20s and the 30k Harley branded units, the 30k set was actually cheaper through hornytoad. so ordered a dual pack and should be getting them in the next few days.

will try it without the whim for a while before spending the extra on 2 whims. as dbell says, will live without the voice command functions for a bit to see if it reaches that value added threshold.

From someone who has been using voice command on my bike since almost day one, to me that is the best part about the radio. Especially if you have an iPhone. Could I live without it? Yes, I did before I got this bike a year ago. But I always wished I had it. And now that I do I wouldn't want to not have it.

You can't go wrong with SENA or CARDO. I own both. I have the WHIM on my bike but would not spend the money if I had it to do over. I prefer the CARDO over the SENA for two reasons,Sound Quality and Voice Commands. If you have a smart phone and pair it directly to the headset then you have all the functions plus more than any motorcycle Infotainment unit. Mount your phone on the handlebars and you don't need carplay. The problem I find with carplay is not all the app's on my phone work.

You would only require one WHIM. Curious to hear how you like the 30k.

Some folks seek the comfort of the straight and narrow. Me? I prefer the twisted road.
