WHIM install question

I am going to install a WHIM on my bike. Initially I was planning to have the dealer install. But after watching a couple vids I’m pretty confident in my own skills to do that. Why pay 2 hrs labor for something I can do. I know it has to be flashed by dealer once installed and most likely a cost associated to do that. My question is why take the seat and tank off to run that mini usb to be under the right side cover per HDs install instructions. I’m thinking of leaving that mini usb up front somewhere. It’s just to use when updating firmware. Is there a reason for the right side cover or am I having a bad idea? The only rational I can think of for under right side cover is to standardize the location for dealership Techs.

You could run it into the left or right storage compartment since you already have to remove the outer fairing. I just ran an iPhone USB/FireWire cable from the right compartment through the slots on the upper outer corner next to the hinge, through the fairing, up through the speedo/tach housing, then up to my right handle bar where my RokForm mount is located. I originally thought I’d have to drill into the compartment, but upon inspection realized it wasn’t necessary.

Most of the time, the suggested locations for things are just what you said; standardization for the next tech that works on that bike. Saves the tech and the customer time hunting for something. There are always ways to route stuff differently than the instructions. Biggest thing is for you the bike owner to know where things are so that if you have to go to the dealer for something, you can tell them where said item or connection is to save everyone time.
