Otterbox Cradle Install

Alright, here is the write up for mounting my Otterbox phone cradle on my gauge pod.

First, remove the clip from the Otterbox cradle. Basically the disc you see from the phone side has tabs that snap into the clip on the backside. You need to pop those tabs and then it comes apart. It's a bit of a pain, that thing is on there good.

Then remove your gauge pod, and then carefully remove your HD logo insert. Use a hair drier to soften the double sided tape, and then you can use a small screwdriver from the slot in the gauge pod behind it to gently work it off.

This is what it looks like when removed:

And this is what the back side looks like:

Now for hardware and spacers, I raided my stash of R/C stuff and found some nice stainless buttonhead screws and aluminum spacers. These spacers are even threaded the same as the screws, so when installed, a little dab of blue locktite on the spacer threaded will give some extra security.

I had this little chrome insert in my box of misc stuff, and since I didn't want the spacers right on my paint, I used this piece to go between the pod and the spacers. It also doubled nicely as a template.

Next I drilled the mounting holes in the pod, chrome strip, and cradle. I don't know why the holes look uneven in the pic, they aren't

Before assembly, I made an access hole in the Otterbox cradle so I can press the power button while mounted.

Then bolt it all together with some blue loctite, and it's all done!

I took it our for a ride, and it's very tight and stable. Doesn't shake or vibrate at all.

Final thoughts.....

One thing I found when drilling the Otterbox cradle is that it's not just cheap plastic. It's very strong fiber re-enforced plastic, as I could tell from the shavings and when it was drilled through.

I'm not sure if I'll keep it on or not. I just really don't like the look of something mounted to my gauge pod when the phone isn't in it. But I'll give it a few days and see if the function is worth the eyesore.

Ok...follow up...I didn't like how high it sat (blocked the clock on the radio while riding) so I pulled it off to move the mount points and found hairline cracks in the case where the screws went through.

So I'm going to agree with the guy in the other post, it needs to be attached to a metal mount like the Iron Aces.

Sorry guys. Hopefully my post will save someone from trying this and having worse damage.
