Different Idea for a Shark Week

When I was at SW IX and was riding up thru Spearfish Canyon I had an idea but am not completely sure how this could or would work. Up til now SW has been you ride to one place and then go on day rides to see the area where you are staying. Now I don't know if this is even a possibility but could a SW be done where it was a riding event?

What I mean by this is like some HOG rallies where instead of staying in one place you ride to a different location each night. By doing this you get to see more of an area. What made me think about this was a HOG rally I went to about 10 years ago where we started in Pendleton, OR and rode to the Pacific coast. We went to Crater Lake & then thru the Rouge River area which has some amazing sights to see. I don't know how the logistics of this could be worked out but I am just throwing this out here for discussion.

I talked with some members who said they felt it wouldn't work because you have people coming from all over the country and having to unpack and then pack back up each day during the rally wouldn't be as inviting. After being on the road myself for 4 days after SW IX I can understand this. It would be a different experiance for those who had come a long way.

One idea brought up was to maybe do this but do a loop ride where you came back to the first hotel you started at. If a place could be found where you could store most of your gear from the long ride that was secure and then come back to that same place for the last night it might be possible. But again this is just an idea.

The next idea was to offer an extra event prior to or after SW for those who wanted to partake. So like for SW XI which is in Lake Tahoe a continuation of the event would be to lead people up thru California and into Oregon to see some of the sights that they may not know about. Then not everyone would have to go but those that wanted could.

Again I am just throwing ideas out here. My reasons for this is becasue I know there are many beautiful things to see out here in the west that many do not know about. And unless you can research it ALOT or know someone from the area you might miss out on things.

My first RGC on the HOG rally from Pendleton, OR to the Pacific coast

Each day you are allowed to ride which ever route you want and then you meet up at a destination each night with the whole group. But you pick the roads or sights you want to see. Each leg of the trip is 250-300 miles so you have time to stop and enjoy the trip.

Again I don't know that this would work but I'm just throwing ideas out here.

In 2021 if there is interest I would be willing to lead people from the Lake Tahoe event up into Oregon and show them some of these areas. If we stay off the interstates and ride the local hwys and backroads there are some beautiful sights to be seen.

Hey Rick,

There will most likely be a gypsy tour arranged by Hutmo befote SW XI and I will be hosting a travelling tour thru Western Canada, Washington and Oregon to SW XI the 7-10 days before SW XI.

Because of the remote location in BC we will most likely limit the number of bikes to 20 for this tour,

More to come after SW X so as not to prempt the work of Hutmo and his organizing committee.

Okay keep me posted. I'd be interested. I am not trying to step on anyone's toes I was just throwing an idea out here to get some input. And being a SW newbie I have only read about Hutmo's gypsy tour before but since I wasn't able to attend really hadn't paid much to the threads. Hope I didn't offend anyone that wasn't my intent.

Great minds think alike!

When Carol and I were dreaming up SWIX, we considered a two-location approach before we secured the Deadwood venue. We could have sorted out the logistics, but the nomad approach would be a lot of additional effort on participants with tight schedules.

The original Shark Weeks were intentionally planned as Tuesday through Thursday events, allowing attendees to travel weekends and take only one week off work. In recent years, people have begun showing up earlier and earlier with many staying later. I tend to arrive earlier because I like riding 900+ mile days and having a day or two to chill in the area before the official start.

Chris (Hutmo) is taking Shark Week X back to the (his) original idea with an official Tues-Thurs schedule in Gettysburg. It's a given that many will arrive early as there's so much wonderful terrain to ride there and in the surrounding areas.

Chris also created the Gypsy Tour, which led SW riders across the country in a multi-day trek through iconic locations and sites such as Route 66. Following the tour online and greeting the riders as they arrived at the SW hotel was always a favorite part of my SW experience. I'm not sure if there will be a Gypsy Tour this year as he will be pretty tied up with SWX.

Looking at your FB post, it appears you might have your own nationwide tour to SWX. I'm envious and can't wait till I'm retired and have that kind of time on my hands.

Yes but you don't want to BE RETIRED the way I was. Believe me it isn't worth it one bit. Plus I might not of had to work but I still had a kid to raise so I was just a stay at home dad.
