Mean Green

A little background first. I purchased a 2001 FLTRI last August. The bike had about 23,000 miles and was mostly stock with a Stage 1 upgrade. The bike had a decent amount of accessories and seemed like a good deal at the time.

I test rode the bike and made the deal. I then rode the bike home 4 hours away. Everything was going great. I upgraded a few things right away to make riding more enjoyable. These are thing I did last September:

Progressive 412 heavy duty rear shocks
Heritage Bars
Sony head unit
RF PBR300x2 amp
Long Ride Shields Mako 12" windshield

Everything was going great but, it did not last. The RG started running poorly. It rough idled, coughed, backfired through the throttle body, and on and on. This is the notorious MM fuel injection. I tried a lot of things to fix it. I eventually gave up and took it to an indy.

While at the indy, the owner of the shop took the bike out for a test ride. While on the test, a semi lost it's drive shaft in front of the shop owner and damaged the RG. The shop owner was fine but the RG received damage to the wheels, tires, axle shaft and other items. This all happened in September.

Fast forward to October. I get Mean Green back October 22nd after all insurance claims had been handled. I rode home and the bike idled high by the time I got 10 miles. I immediately called the shop and explained. I was told "that's just the nature of Marelli injection." I was told I could bring it back and they would look at it some more. Well it started snowing a few days later and did not stop snowing until a few days ago. With the shop's help I was able to get a lot of things fixed on the RG. The list:

HD Chrome Cast wheels
Metzler 888 tires
New bearings and axle shaft
Progressive Monotubes in the front 1" lowering

I stopped in to the shop in December and talked to the owner. Our discussion alerted me to the fact that the mechanic that actually worked on my bike had been let go. The owner wanted the opportunity to make it right. I told him I was fed up with trying to make the MM injection right and was looking for a better alternative. I was leaning toward a carb conversion. I started buying parts to convert and decided it was a good time to upgrade the tensioners. Items upgraded/replaced in the last month:

Keihin CV 40 carb
S&S air cleaner
Screamin' Eagle 6200rpm street legal ign module
hydraulic tensioner conversion with oil pump
Andrews 21N conversion cams
Sirius XM Stratus 6 hardwired
Super Bright LEDs in the small gauges
Chrome gauge bezels
Charisma Audio speaker grills
PAC-SWI handlebar controls
Kicker 6.5" speakers
'09 CVO headlight bezel
upgraded well-nuts

Phew my fingers are tired! See pics below.

More pics

The carb still needs a little tuning, however Mean Green runs better now than it ever did with injection!

Looks and sounds like you've been busy spending money! LOL Hope they get the carb right and the weather warms up for you because you're way past due to start riding the crap out of her.

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!” - HST

Good ride

It was 57 degrees and sunny today. We got some rain last week to wash the salt off the roads so today was a good day to ride. I know the carb probably needs a little tweeking but, it seems to be rich rather than lean. It's not bad either way.

Rode about 75 miles mostly close to home just in case I had issues. I was smiling the whole time. I am very happy with the Andrews 21s. I'm getting very close to slaying the dragon of a poor running bike. I hope to need new tires next year :-)

Had a buddy do the same to his 2000 EG. He said that bike ran so much better with the Mikuni carb rather than the MM injection, he even said it sounded better.

2010 FLTRX , Stage 1, 13" Madstad, Mono tubes, SuperShox, Heritage style bars. Alpine CDE-HD149BT,Soundstream Picasso Nano Series PN4.520 , 5X7 and 6.5 Infinity Kappa speakers
If I have to explain ,you wouldn't under stand anyway.

Definitely sounds better. Nice lope with the cams and sounds like a Harley now.
