paint or vinyl pinstripes?

I have a black denim RG Custom and I'm not a huge fan of the red pinstripes. I know lots of people have gotten them covered in gloss black like picture attached. I got a quote from a local pinstriper for $425 to do fender, tank, side covers and bags. He said he's done 5 already. But has anyone done vinyl pinstripes to cover existing? If so can you post pictures. How do the pinstripes hold up over clear coat? Any suggestions would be appreciated

I went the cheap route and used 3M vinyl pinstripe tape and went over the factory stripes on my 2010 Scarlet Red. The Pinstripes were dark red from factory. Cost was $13 for the tape. its not a real easy task to keep a straight line though. An experienced window tinter may have a steadier hand.
Anyway the tape is holding up fine for over 2 years, maybe even 3 now.
$400 seems a little steep for painting them, but if hes doing the tank lettering too, and possibly some custom pinstripes, i would go for it!

Thanks DED. Looks good, it should hold up ok on denim since there won't be any waxing etc. I might have to give it a try. The $425 estimate was only for pinstripes.

$425! That's way to much money, IMO. Vinyl is the cheap way & also looks cheap. Just my
2 cents. Did you try a few different pinstripe shops? Good luck.

I went to a few shops and they all bring in a pinstriper from outside and it happens to be the same guy lol. No wonder his prices are high, he has no competition. He also does local bike shows and does work at the Dealers when they have open house. quotes were pretty much the same at all the shops. So I called the guy directly, he said it takes him at least a whole day to do the job. I know others who have done it themselves, masked off and used a paint pen on their pinstripes. That has potential to come out crappy and it's not like a decal that can be pulled off. I guess you get what you pay for. Thanks for the input

I spent a couple hours one day putting vinyl stripes on and I think it turned out nice. just gotta go slow and have a steady hand. if you mess up, it's cheap to peel off and start over. just make sure you buy enough.

I wanted to see what my bike looked like with a different color and I think this is a great way to do it. from 5 feet away you could'nt tell it was vinyl. if youre anal retentive then you will notice the edges when you give it a close inspection. besides nobody is gonna call you a cheap bastard if they happen to notice the stripes are vinyl. do what you want.

wondering what other colors might look good? throw some vinyl stripes on it. get tired of the color? peel it off.

$20 experiment sure beats a $400 experiment.

I put vinyl on my 67 GTO back in the day and they lasted for years without a nick. I saw the car years after I sold it and it was still on it.

here are a few pics.

now with all that said if I were to decide on a color I wanted to absolutely stay with, I would get them painted.

cant tell you if $400 is too much or not but if that's the best price I could find in my area then that's what I would spend.

cant take it with you.

You did a good job, your bike looks great. Good idea, maybe I'll try different colors before I permanently paint them. Thanks

I think $400 is very high...I got my entire bike custom striped and it cost a total of $300. Check it out on the front page of the main forum. Just posted pics today. Obviously a bit tough to get other quotes if there is only one striper in your area. Good luck.

started to put some $3. 1/8" black vinyl pinstripes on just to see how it'll look and then decide if I want to have them professionally painted on.
