Inner Fairing painting -

I"m wanting to paint my inner (07 RG). I know I'd have to get HD paint or PPG (which I have the code for, Mirage Orange Pearl). Whats the process to do it ?? Strip whatever chemical is on the fairing now? Base coat(s) ? How many coats ? Clear coat after ??

Thanks

I just had my inner fairing painted orange this past winter. Apparently the MoCo stopped producing mirage orange pearl painted parts. This is a 3 stage paint. My buddy who owns a body shop color matched it for me as he's done in the past for me instead of buying "harley" paint which isn't cheap by the way. It came out very good though. The pearl colors like this orange are alil harder to work with than a non pearl paint.

Mirage orange pearl is a tricoat and for any chance at all for a match us the PPG base/clear and not the HD parts counter paint.

I have shot bags, fenders an inner fairing in this color and it is very difficult and tricky to get the color just right. The main layer is ok to put on but the transparent tinted layer is the tough one to shoot as if you get one coat to much of the tinted orange you have to go back and start all over again.

Prep on an inner fairing isn't that bad as long as it hasn't been ruined with silicone based shiny "Protectants"

The inner is painted at HD with a Matt black finish, use soapy water and a gray scotchbrite pad to scuff it real nice.

Every fairing I do gets sealed with PPG epoxy primer before the colors go on, it's cheap insurance that you won't have adhesion issues down the road

I've been looking for Mirage Orange as well, would like a few parts painted to match. Guess I'll have to find a Belgium paint shop and see if they can match it.

I've found these sites:
Harley-Davidson Mirage Orange
Mirage Orange Pearl - Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Paint

But, I don't have any experience with them.

What did you end up doing and how did it turn out? I had used different 'Protectants' over the years to try to stop the fade. Never worked, I haven't used any for a few years and when I did my inner fairing this spring, I used PrepSol, lacquer thinner, and scotch brite pads to get the oxidized surface off. Then used prepsol again before using kwik seal, color, and clear. No issues with bubbling, peeling or flaking.
