How to Remove/Reinstall Tank Emblem?

Can anyone tell me the proper way to remove the chrome tank emblem from my 16 RGS?
I have an idea but would like to know if there is a proper way so that I can reuse the emblem as well as not damage the tank.

Back Story: I damaged my Vivid Black paint on the tank and want to retain the factory paint/look etc..
$1500 for a new factory tank!
I found a perfect Vivid Black tank off a 15 Street Glide for $300 but the emblem is different. So I would like to put my SGS emblem on
this new tank.

1 Method that worked great when I replaced my fork lowers to get the reflectors off was to use Dental Floss and WD40 They came right off and I used a
little clear silicone to put them on the new painted lowers. But the emblem is much larger and want to make sure it stays on the new tank.

I have always used fishing string to remove the tank badges off of my bikes.

Then I use a blow dryer to heat up the adhesive followed by WD-40 on a clean mico rag.

Works like a champ with zero scratches.

Notice my wig below, tank badges are removed off of my 2015 RGS.

I had my paint shop paint my chromed badges vivid black and when I get my bike back I will reinstall the vivid black tank badges.

As far as putting them back on I will use 3M Automotive VHB tape.

Hmm. Not sure I would use silicone (RTV, I'm assuming).

You can pick up 3M double-sided automotive tape at any auto parts store. It's the same stuff they used to put them on originally. Make sure it's at least 70 degrees out (or in the garage), clean the surfaces thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and trim the excess tape with a razor before applying.

[EDIT: Yeah, what Swomack said. Sorry I didn't read it all the way through.]

Do like Swomack said. Make sure to use plenty of patience in removing the emblems so you don't bend them & distort them. Your other option would be to go to Harley & order a new set of emblems, that way the 3m tape is already attached & perfectly cut to match the emblems, and the new ones won't be distorted.

The only thing I did different than Swomack was I used the hair dryer on the badge heating up the adhesive before using the fishing string

How to Remove/Reinstall Tank Emblem?

As stated before with the fishing line, HD also recommends waxed dental floss. I used the waxed dental floss to remove mine because I like the look of if off better. Then I used 3M adhesive remover to get the rest of it off.

I've used the same technique swomack uses multiple times without any issues. One thing a friend that owned a body shop swore by was a "3M Erasor wheel". You chuck it up in a drill motor and use it to remove the left behind sticky residue. He swore that it does not damage your paint finish. Its what he used in his business.

I have used that 3M eraser wheel for years in the body shop business. It works great at removing residue, stickers, etc. If the surface is clean, it will not damage the paint. If it is just adhesive you want to remove, the afore mentioned ideas would be a better idea.

WTFranz, would you be interested in selling the Street Glide Emblem to me ?? I'm not a fan of the "chrome" looking one on my 2016 RGS.

Thanks,
Liz
