Vivid Black - My experience and whats to learn
So I bought a 2015 Road King Standard in black. I modify the rear fender and source some paint from a PPG dealer. With the inquiry comes the 'What year model?' question. My initial thinking is what does it matter, its black, just run of the mill Harley black. Well in 2013 Harley re-uses the Vivid Black name with a new color Vivid Black Pearl (AKA Black Pearl). In summary here is the difference:
Pre 2013 Vivid Black - PPG 9890 - Has a blue tint in the base, with the result being deep, dark black. Its base/clear.
2013 Vivid Black Pearl - PPG 934199 - Has a white tint in the base, with the result being more to the gray shade of black. Its base/top coat (silver metallic w/pearl)/clear.
The Vivid Black 9890 has no metallic in it. Set it in the sun, or shine a led light over it and you'll only view black.
The Vivid Black Pearl 934199 has a dusting of silver metallic in it, which can easily be seen even in low light.
Another fun lesson with paint, and now I'm off to re-paint it again.
