Crazy Thoughts? Thinking About Trading my ’18 RGS for a new Chieftain

I briefly thought about an Indian before I purchased my ’18 RGS a few months back but I was never a big fan of their retro look with the skirted fenders and I just loved the look of the blacked out RGS. Well I just got back from a week of riding in the Smokies with a buddy who happens to have a new Indian Chieftain. This was my first big trip since buying my bike earlier this year. We traded off bikes a couple of times during our trip and I have to tell you those Chieftains ride dang nice, and it felt like it had a lot more usable torque on the mountain roads than my M8. Not only that I was completely embarrassed by my Infotainment System as compared to that Indian Ride Command on my buddy’s bike, you definitely get more bells and whistles for your money with the Indian. When he asked me what I thought about it, I told him I really liked how it rode but the retro styling just wasn’t my thing. Then he goes and pulls up a picture on his phone of the newly redesigned 2019 Chieftain Dark Horse in White Smoke and I was like DAMN now that’s more my style. I have been a loyal Harley owner for the past 26-years but I have to admit after comparing the two I am very tempted to go and talk to the local Indian dealer to see what they will do on a trade.

Help bring me back to my senses.

Kick rocks, beat it, C ya!!! @eddienelson and @James should be along anytime now. They’re much better at talking people off the edge of the cliff.

Really though for me there’s nothing aesthetically pleasing about Indian motorcycles so I don’t give a damn about how they ride or what bells and whistles they have but to each his own. If it floats your boat......set sail.

I considered an Indian Springfield when I bought my M8 Road King. The 3 Indian dealers I could have bought from didn't even come close to the deal my local Harley dealer gave me and they all had '16 Springfields compared to the '17 Road King. Without the retro fenders the Indians are nothing much IMO. The retro fenders are the only reason I was even considering one.

I won't be buying a batwing faired bike regardless of make, otherwise I would probably be on the Moto Guzzi MGX-21 Flying Fortress which is a sport bike compared to both the Indian and the Harley.

If you are interested, go and join the Indian forum and check out all the complaints about the bikes and how they improved the bikes but left the owners of the previous models hanging. Bad leather on the seats, poor paint, less than stellar sound system, electrical issues.

Do some research on Polaris as a company, their maintenance costs, their products, and their warranty claims.

Also, go and see what they will be willing to give you for your Road Glide.

Good Luck.

Crazy

Keep What You Have

https://www.indianmotorcycle.com/en-...in-dark-horse/

I’m not an Indian guy but that’s cool if you are or might be

It don’t matter what everybody thinks because it’s your deal not ours but sure I’ll give you my opinion to help you come to your senses

I’ve never been the I got to keep up with the Jones’s guy

Try to find Indian dealerships verse Harley dealerships

Your 18 is badass

Coming from a 2015 RGS guy

Then there’s the fairing facts

Your leaning towards a batwinged bike, wtf, lol

After owning a Glide I would never go back to a batwinged bike

The Roadglide IMO is a way better looking bike as well, once again IMO

Be smart and feel blessed with what’s sitting in your garage

I don't really know what to say, I am more of a ride wtf ever kind of bike you want to guy. I would certainly spend some time on thier forums and get a real feel for the brand. My buddy is a die hard victory guy, we constantly go back and forth with shit talking in each other's brands. He never has a come back when I bring up the lousy dealer network which is usually more interested in side by side or 4 wheeler business, their lack of available parts at those dealersships, poor fit and finish plus the lousy resale. To be fair, I have no comebacks when it come to Harley's new m8 engine documented issues or about the lack of power on pretty much any Harley engine compared to Polaris going back 10 years. They are pulling a lot bigger numbers with cams and some really big numbers on big builds without major drivetrain issues like the harley has.

Ok, crazy long story short.... The Indians are ugly as fuck. The grass is always greener on the side... Good luck in your choice man, I would ride with you no matter what you chose.

The fit and finish still isnt up to par when you put them against H-D. I’ll never say never but the lack of dealership network and overall quality of the bikes just aren’t there yet for me to consider jumping ship.

Hopefully Indians efforts will push H-D to upping their game and putting out a better product
