2016 rear wheel options

Hey guys, I've been talking with Rob at HogPro about changing to custom set of wheels. When I said I want to go with a 21x17 set up he said the 17 on the rear won't work, clearance and ride ability issues. On my old 2014 Street Glide I had a 21x17 set up and no problems. Anybody know what has changed on the 16's that a 17 with a 200 won't work?

Nobody makes a re-inforced tire to fit the 17 " rim. The 200 Metzeler is too soft, the 888 180 Metzeler is not in production yet and I have heard various opinions on the Dunlop Elite. The stocker wheel on the new Glides has over 1000# capacity. Nothing else is close. If anybody out there knows of a good combination 21/17 let everone know. My bike is all over the road above 75 MPH. Had to take off the 200/55/17 brand new Metzeleron the rear and put the stocker back on . Smooth as a baby's butt up to 110MPH. This tire and wheel combo worker perfect on my 2011, but pretty much sucks except for around town and looking cool. So I am out $$$$ for a new set of tires. .
Maybe Bridgestone ad to right of the screen over there has a solution

I'm running a 21/17 combo on my '12 and there is very little (1/16") room between the tire and belt. However my engine/trans/swingarm alignment is off which is being fixed as I type this. The newer bikes (14+) have been hit and miss on clearance (probably alignment issues as well) and that's probably the reason why Rob is recommending not to run the 200 on the back. He doesn't want you having issues right out of the gate so they recommend against the 200 rear tire.

As for tires that work in the 21/17 combo... I'm running Commander IIs and have had zero issues with them other than the occasional belt scuff. If I was in the market to start all over with a 21/17 I'd do the 21/18 with 180 and be done.

Go with the 18 rear. There are lot more choices in tires. I am on travel in Dallas today, stopped by Maverick HD. Had them pull down a 200/55/17 Dunlop 407 for a Fatboy Low. The stocker on a bagger is 407T. Tire seems stiffer on the sidewall than the Metzeler, but it is only rated about 100lbs less than the 407T. Not sure if would cure the wag at high speed, but I would like to know if anyone out there has tried this tire and the results.

It has something to do with some brackets rubbing. I am at home on medical leave and don't have my tech near to give me the specifics. PM did send out a tech sheet on how to work around this. We have not had any issues with a 200/55-17 Metzeler as far as ride ability.

Most of our customers with 2016 models prefer to go with the 18 x 5.50 to avoid any issues at all.

This is what your co-worker Scott told me also. Runs on the right rear fender bracket and requires some cutting grinding for clearance.

Jeff, hope you are on the upside of being on Medical leave.. I will look at the bag and fender brackets for any wear marks, but if there is an issue there it must be occuring as the tire grows with speed.
Have one of the guys at the shop post this or PM it to me. Or post it to the Coastal page. Your guys are the best when it comes to customer seervice. I want to cure this issue ASAP.
