My friend is looking at a 2011 Road Glide Custom with 103 Power Pack. I told him that I don't think it comes with cams. He asked the dealership and they said that they don't know..... I find that hard to believe. Input please.

It does not come with cams. However it does come with an oil cooler and an automatic decompression release because the compression is bumped by around .6. It responds to basic mods a little better than the 96 motor, but a stage one 96 will out power a stock 103. The 103 is a great starting place for building power.

I know there are two kits sold by HD, one with and one without cam kits with about a $200 diff in price. And I didn't know that a Stage one 96 would out power a stock 103. I'm in that deciding phase leaning heavily on the 103 kit. How much stronger can one make a stock 96 to be comparible with a beefed up 103?

One thing to remember about the 103" vs the 96", It is so much hotter than the 96" that HD includes the oil cooler to make sure it doesn't burn up under stock set up. I have had two friends that have bought the 103". They both say the 103" is so much hotter than the 96" or the 88" one had had before that they did regret going for the 103" and not just getting the 96".

I also have the Stage 1 on my '09 96". I can pull away from them every time.

I don't know I have ridden a new T/C every year since they came out (work related) and I can say without a doubt my new RGU is no hotter then any of the other bikes including the 04 I traded for it. Maybe I am just immune to the heat as i used to own an ST1300 and also rode those for work too. No harley puts out heat like they do LOL.

Bike comes lean from the factory, making it hot. I put fuel moto's stage one head pipes, mufflers, intake, and PC-5. This setup makes the bike richer and is supposed to take the torque to around 100 ft pds and add around 12 horse. Also helps bike run cooler. That being said I never noticed any extra heat over my 2007 96.

I have often wondered how running more fuel (richer) and more air (opening up the airbox and exhaust) through it, which creats more power will make it run cooler.

Like, if I put more wood on the fire it will be cooler. Or, if I put no gas and air through the bike it will get so hot it melts down. Oh m doG! I think it's burning up in the garage right now!

Could someone either explain this or point me to an understandable explaination?

Think of a blacksmith. The bellows pushes more air in the fire (not fuel) thus making the fire burn hotter. A lean engine has too much air thus making it hotter. The trick to getting the bike to run cooler is the same as getting the fuel mixture correct. Get it?

I bought the 2011 RG custom with the Power Pak from Harley Factory, it includes the 103 with an oil cooler. My dealer told me that the majority of new buyers add pipes and A/C with tuner to their 103's and vola no problem, unless u leave the stock head pipes, this is where u get a heat issue. More fuel, unburnt, hits the cat. convertor and it gets hotter than lean burn at the cat. This heat radiates to everything over time. Now I am sure he knows more than I do about Harleys, but I know enough about cat.s to know they work as stated.
I am doing dealer adds as well, New 2/1 Bassani RoadRage exhaust, Free flowing A/C, 255 cams, and a SuperTuner, to get me fat enough that epa won't like but without the headpipes and the new goodies, it will be a healthier cooler running engine. My pipe was backordered til mid July so I got to take it home for a month til all of my parts come in.
Right now I have no heat issue with 90* days in stock form, I will be watching after they do the install and will report back with my findings after the changes.

I just put a stage one hd air cleaner on, D&D boss fat cat, t-man 600 cam ( new grind not on his site yet) and tts master tune. Stock I had 63hp and 79tq. I am now at 98hp and 111tq. Just put an a$$ wooping on a se 110 ultra, he had cams and a tts tune also. :D:cool:

Pgh heat is a non issue if tuned right, including the timing tables!

And the 103 comes with stock cams from factory, dealer might have a cam option but it's at the dealer level
