My initial thoughts after a short road trip on the new (to me) Road Glide Ultra.

So yesterday we made the plunge and traded the '07 Street Glide for the '11 Road Glide Ultra. I knew last Tuesday when I took it for a short test ride that I really liked the way the bike rode.

This afternoon I put about 100 miles on the bike.

The ride is MUCH smoother than the '07 Street Glide (IMO). I am no where near as fatigued after the ride as I would have been on the Street Glide (vibrations and helmet buffeting). I was able to see objects in the mirrors more clearly than on the Street Glide. The stock seat (with riders adjustable backrest) was comfortable.

The cruise control is a very cool and handy feature. I was able to operate it easily even though I had no previous experience with cruise control on a bike.

The radio, although seemingly distant when in the saddle, is not really that hard to reach if necessary.

The big shark nose is obviously much larger than the batwing on the Street Glide, but I got fairly comfortable with it. I'm sure I will still need to remain cautious.

The Klock Werks windshield is too short to suit me and the handlebars need to have more pullback to be more comfortable to me. I hope to change these out soon.

I'm very happy with the RGU overall. I am actually planning my first road trip, which was something I really did not seriously consider doing on the Street Glide.

I'm sure I will find other cool and positive features as time goes on, but, I'm sure I'm not telling too many folks here something they don't already know. :D

HD has Heritage bars specifically for our bikes. I have them and am very happy.

Windshields are one of the most discussed topics on the forum. There are a lot of good ones, The one that works can depend a lot on your height in the seat. I recommend reading reviews of as many as you can before buying one. A bunch of us have bought several. Someone somewhere wants the one you have.

Thanks!

I heard about the Heritage bars from another member here whom I met at the dealership yesterday. I am leaning towards them right now as they seem like they will fit the bill, and are not out of reach (pun) price wise.

I have scanned the forums on the windshields, and much like the SG, there are seemingly endless options.

Thanks,
Jim

I'd narrow it to 4 based on reading posts on the for the past year. Windvest and Long Ride Shields - Mako are 2 very popular ones, the Mako is currently on sale at $99 plus shipping. Cee Bailey's makes several and Madstad has a very loyal following, it is the most expensive but is adjustable.

A lot depends on our height and whether you have a lowered Ultra or a custom which is an inch lower than our Ultras to begin with.

Ride on. The roadie gets more miles than any other bike they make.
Ride it for a week and you'll wonder why you had the SG. Enjoy.

Welcome to the tank from a displaced Hoosier in West Alabama.
Te Heritage bars are a great upgrade. I have them but want a bit more height so it's all up to you. The rides will get longer and you still will not be worn out. I swapped my lowers for Hogg Chopps and the buffeting is even lower.
Lots of choices to make and the answer is what's best for you.

Congrats on the new bike and good luck sorting out the windshield/handlebar choices. Lots of threads for both here. I went with Heritage bars and flip flop between a Tall HD and a 14" Windvest.

Thank you. I am certain your experience here has saved me several hours of research. I will be looking into all that you mentioned.

Thanks!
