At 7,124 miles the rear cylinder decided to self destruct. Had the bike at dealership at the 5 k service prior. I checked the oil level after the failure and it was at normal level. My riding style is semi aggressive but have never gotten close to redline. Harley did cover under warranty and replaced with a long block without any hassle. Bike is stock except for slipons.

Like any good horror story, it "screamed mercilessly and then was silent"! lol. Is it my imagination, or is the MoCo going through a significant number of M8 long-blocks these days.

Dumb question maybe, but I've never asked ..... when they replace a complete long-block do they stamp them with the original serial number or are you stuck with a non-matching numbers bike from that point on?

If the long block has been received by your dealer yet, just how long does that whole process take? They have to receive you old case before they enter a work order I suppose, so I can see this taking a while ...but hope for your sake it doesn't.

Yes, ride responsibly! If you keep the front wheel off the ground most of the time you'll get much longer tire life and you'll have plenty of tread left for when you have to ride in the rain (on 2 wheels).

Not true @JacktheBagger. When the approval from MoCo is made the order is placed for the long block. MoCo will then stamp the original number on the new longblock and then ship it to the dealer. The availability of the long block is what determines how long it will take. When the new LB arrives at the dealer the reusable parts will then be transferred to the new LB and either the left case halve of possibly the whole engine will be shipped back to the MoCo. Sometimes in certain cases they will want to inspect the engine to see why the parts failed.

Depending on the tech at the dealer and how much time he has he may remove the damaged engine and do everything he can do to be ready to install the new engine. That way he can get the bike back to the customer as fast as he can.

At least this is what we did and I have never heard of them reusing the left case halves in the last several years.

What I need to find out is if the dealer will take my left case hand delivered , instead of them stripping the motor down , as I am undecided on which route to go when this one squats .. I will either do a long block or take the cases and have a timken conversion and new wheels or my wheels trued up and done right with DH rods and me do the rest or let someone else just do the whole motor or put a crate in ..

A word on slip on's. Of all the emissions standards set by the EPA, noise is the one most often overlooked. They measure all the noise the vehicle makes, exhaust, mechanical, tires, and if it is below the limit in force at that time, they certify the vehicle. Adding louder cans is an emissions violation, if they cause the vehicle to exceed the noise standard it was certified to. The EPA measures it as one total sound. The EU is worse. They measure it at idle, part throttle on the dyno and full throttle on the dyno and they set the sound pickups so as to zero in on the actual sources of noise. And they bring them back in and recheck them after the vehicle has been in service. One of the things lots of manufactures to move away from valve adjustment pucks.

One of the reasons for the M8 going to a single cam and fixed rocker shafts was to loose some mechanical noise. Mechanical noise is one of the hardest to meet standards in the Euro certs.

Not uncommon. Seen several where the rear cylinders meltdown for some reason. Be glad your Long Block is on its way. Ordered one a week ago, estimated delivery JANUARY 28, 2021! Oil Pan for another - FOUR MONTHS! We've been told the 21MY Production is starting and they won't pull anything off the line for the first 90 days because production startup is so far behind because of COVID.

At 3000 mine took a shit. 2019 RG CVO Was on my first big ride out in the boonies and the thing started clacking like it was a thrown lifter in a car......No cell service, still under warranty..F it, I kept driving it, it shifted okay and seemed to still run pretty good but that clacking was terrible. got to civilization and rented a haul and took her home in shame. They found a Harley bolt in the oil pump area...WTF. Harley shipped an entire new crated engine all under warranty. i begged for the 131 and was willing to pay the difference but they wont sell them in CA. as they dont meet their emissions out here. F right Off Ca. That sucks. The VIN is stamped the same as the old. The only thing that stuck in my craw was that they dont restart the warranty with the brand new engine, only the remainder of from my original purchase date.

pretty much the way warranties work. there's a well known exhaust mfg that advertises a lifetime warranty. if you have to use it, then the replacement exhaust basically has no warranty.
