The 96 crank is a stroker crank compared to the 88 crank. There is no real difference between the 88 and the 96 except for the crank, being that the 96 crank has 3/8 more stroke than the 88 crank.
For example when you buy new HD jugs the label on the box will say for 88 inch and 96 inch engines or when you get 103 jugs the labeling will say for 95 inch and 103 inch engines because the same jugs will work on either engine.
To make the engine go from 88/95 to 96/103 HD put in a stroker crank.
The good thing is it is back on the road again and I wish you miles of smiles.
