Love that body style truck, always have. Nice job restoring her back to better than brand new. I have a 1996 k1500 stepside short bed that i am going to bring back to life. I want to replace the 305 with a 5.3 - 6.0 LS motor with a 4l80e transmission, and new paint and interior. Looking forward to seeing your's finished. It's giving me inspiration to get busy working on mine. Thanks.
Cab is now back on the frame along with the front clip and the truck now runs and can be driven in and out of the garage. Still have more finish body work to do on the front clip and bed before painting. Inside the cab has been painted along with the door jams, behind the seat I have complete the sound deadener and carpet. Still a ways to go but making progress. I'll be putting the doors on tomorrow and continuing to get the body finished up.
I've been off line a while, I had a small set back with the build. The old 235 engine has taken a crap, rod started knocking. Parts for the 235 are ridiculous so I'm building a small block, cheaper and more power. Before you ask I have no desire for a LS in the old truck, not that there is anything wrong with an LS I just want an old school carbureted small block. Hopefully I'll have everything back from the machine shop in about three weeks to get it running again. Body work is going slow with the cold weather, I don't like doing filler work in a non heated garage.
Finally have my engine built and will get it installed this week and get back to finishing the body work and paint. While waiting on the machine shop I did get a lot of small stuff done in the cab carpet fitted, carpet thresholds made, stereo and speakers wired. I still have to adapt the exhaust from 6 cylinder duals to the new small block but shouldn't be to difficult to fill in the small cap. Hopefully this thing will be done sometime this spring!
Rebuilt small block installed and running. Should be in paint in the next three weeks. Put about 20 miles on it just running around the neighborhood, being I’m driving it with no lights or bed I get anything from thumbs up to I have a pecker coming out of my forehead looks. Bed wood is stained but still needs the satin Spar applied.
I’ve enjoyed this build but will be happy to get it finished.
Tomorrow I’ll be doing two coats of high build primer then blocking and painting it sometime between 22-30 May weather permitting. It’s been a long process but looking forward to the end. I started this process back in Nuly of 2019, every nut and bolt on this truck as been restored or replaced, along with several other things. Tough task in what they call a two car garage.
