Going back to Kansas for a family reunion in June. Basicly we pick up I40 at Kingman, AZ and take it all the way to Tucumcari, NM with an over nights stay in Gallup.

At Tucumcari we pick highway 54 and actually take it all the way to Fort Scott, Kansas (reunion location) which is in eastern Kansas. Second nights stay is in Guymon, OK. The trip one way is about 1325mi. so I'm only going to do about 430mi a day with the wife on the back.

After the reunion I'm riding her up to the Kansas City airport were she gets on a Southwest flight back to Las Vegas......... I'm going on to Colorado for a few days.

MY CONCERNS:
Getting through Albuquerque, Wichita and then up to the KC airport. It looks like I'll have about a 30mi "offset" in Wichita to get back on highway 54.

Any input or advice about getting through these "metro areas" would be helpfull.

When you get to Wichita (on 54), take the exit for I-235 North. That takes you up and around the city, it connects with Hwy 254 just north of Wichita. 254 hooks back up with 54 in El Dorado. That avoids the 30 mile offset, then 54 takes you all the way to Ft Scott.

don't want to hijack your thread here but I was gonna post one asking for advice on the AZ, NM area and saw this thread so thought i'd ask you. PM if you want.

I'll be riding through texas, new mexico, staying a night in arizona and then heading into colorado this summer. ALL states I've never rode in before. Any advice? (good scenic routes, city bypasses, must sees, must eats....) I'll probably dead head until I get down there, but then I'm looking to enjoy some country I've never seen before.

When you're ready to head to KC and the airport, just take 69 north out of Ft. Scott to I-435 West (at Overland Park, KS) and take it all the way up to the airport. You'll miss a lot of traffic on that route (unless you come through at rush hour!). While you're up at the airport, the H-D plant is only a few miles away (112th Street exit off I-29), but they'll be shut down for full tours because they'll be starting 2013 production in June.

Depending on how you want to get to Colorado, you'll have a lot of options for heading west (I-70, US-36, US-50, etc.).

After the airport I'll go on up to St. Joseph, Mo. and spend about 1 1/2 days with my Dad. He said he could see highway 36 from his house. Once I leave it's highway 36 to Norton, KS. then Highway 83 to Garden City, KS for the night.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

That'll work. And to be clear, you'll want to take I-435 WEST, which shortly thereafter turns north towards the airport (about 40 miles later; Google Map it and you'll see what I'm talking about). They're doing a lot of construction at US-69 and I-435, so be careful when going through there, but there aren't a lot of options to steer you around it.

Nitro brother gave perfect direction through or around KC. Just be careful with the construction at 69 and I435. it's a mess.

I would add that once you get up by the airport on 435 you will have to take I-29 South a couple of miles to get to the airport. I normally cut over on hwy 152 East to I-29 north to the airport exit. I just think its easier.

A special thanks......

A special thanks to JayKS, Nitrobrother and BigJack. Gentlemen your instructions were exact; I had no issues or problems. Even the road construction at 69 & I435 (Kansas, taking the wife to the airport) simply was not that bad.

This ride covered approx. 3225mi. there were no close calls or panic stops. It was a good trip and family reunion.

Thanks again,

Awesome...glad you were able to get around and miss all the bad stuff; sounds like a great ride. Did you get a chance to run by the Harley plant or the stealership (Worth's) up by the airport? How did you get from St. Joe back home?

Hey Nitrobro, unfortunatly I didn't make it to the plant or dealership. I don't know what it is, but it seems like I'm always so pressed for time on these trips. It really does take some of the fun out of it....... Out of St. Joseph ( after visiting my Dad) I took Hwy. 36 out to Norton, KS. then 383/83 to Scott City for the first night. Next morning I made it to Hwy 54 at Liberal, KS. then to I40 at Tucumcari, NM. and then the West side of Albq. I stayed at the Route 66 Indian Casino the 2nd. night....kinda liked that place. The next morning early it was on to Las Vegas via Hwy 93 at Kingman, AZ. Approx. 545mi. the last day.

Note: it was quite windy once I crossed over the Missouri River into Kansas for about the first 150mi. But, I ride in winds out here in Nevada, so no big deal I guess. Hwy 36 and 383/83 are great highways to ride on the bike....just try not to do it in 45 to 50mph winds.

I might be a little late to throw in my $0.02, but here are some recommendations.

Cimarron, Taos, Espanola New Mexico. Highways 64 and 68.

If you go through Cimarron you have to seek out the St. James hotel and have lunch or even stay a night (Caution: Hotel is Haunted). Lots of great wild west history in that one building.

Toltec & Cumbres pass between Antonito, CO and Chama NM. Hwy 17. Phenomenal ride.

That's a cool deal. Hmm...US383 looks like it might be interesting. Maybe I need to plan a ride out there some time.
