I replaced my exhaust with a Freedom Performance Union 2-1. The insrtuctions said I should do a re-map. I didn't. I put some miles on my bike and pulled the plugs tonight. Never checked them before the exhaust install and I know these bikes run lean from the Moco but, how do they look to you. I know the white means lean. Does anyone think I will do any damage running my bike without the EFI controller?

Looks good, just like the stock set up. It is lean from the factory and will stay that way till you tune it. The 02 sensors will keep the engine at 14.7 to 1 regaurdless of what you to the exhaust or intake untill you go to open loop at 4000 rpms. get a tuner. Doc

I asked much the same question last month and, considering the replies I received, agree with HD-DOC (I think I do anyway).

Indeed your plugs show lean. Unfortunately that's normal with stock ECM settings but your plugs sure do look lean. My old (very old) drag-racing days memories say there should be a slightly brown/tan ring around the insulator and roughly 1/3 of the way down the "throat" of the plug.

Like Doc, I doubt things will get any better until you go the "tuner" route and, unless you want to rev to the actual red-line for the '96, don't do what I did and pay for the HD "Stage 1" flash. I like the extra revs. Your call on what the revs are worth to you.

Mine already runs almost as lean as yours but I still have the damn CAT. I also have an SEAC but you don't mention your air cleaner (another restrictive gizmo). If you do have (or go to) an SEAC or equivalent, then I (based upon good input from others) also recommend a tuner but would add "ASAP" to Doc's recommendation.

BTW: A positive indicator for destructive lean conditions or major pre-ignition is black freckles on the porcelain inside the plug. That's melted aluminum. Unfortunately, by the time that shows up you already have engine damage.

I don't have your answer but I got a question. How do you like that system? I just bought the same one in black for my 1993 FLHS out in Sturgis. It was a total impulse buy. I did no research before I did it, but I got it for $532 taxed and shipped. They didn't evan have it on a bike at the display. Now I'm having some buyers remorse. Damn One Eyed Jack and those hot bartenders.

Thanks for all the replies guys. To answer some questions i'm still running the stock football (god I hate the looks of that thing) and I love my new exhaust. I did order the quiet baffle for it. The way it sits now it's pretty much a straight pipe, next to no back pressure. Seat of the pants feel right now is it is sick in the mid-range. I think there is just a nice balance of black and chrome on my bike now. I don't have any specks on the plugs. I'm going to order the Ridemaxx controller, it's what they recommend. I think that is the best option suited for me. I have a 1998 Ski-doo 600 tripple and if I saw plugs that color I would have a heart attack!
