FXDTIM found a cool GPS based tracking app. It allows for a degree of privacy in that only those who know your URL can follow you. It can be further secured by assigning passwords for followers if you choose. Users can "friend" other users to essentially see icons for users all over the country as they approach SWIV. Your friends cannot see your other friends unless they are friends with each other. So no one can see you and then start stalking your friends.

You can set it to leave your GPS off (to save battery consumption) until someone looks you up, to stay on when plugged in, and/or to stay off until you turn it on yourself. It can also use known IP address locations for placement.

You can also set a privacy zone (as large as you want) to hide your home or any other location you'd rather others not see.

Mine is:

It would be cool to follow the progress of the riders coming to SWIV. If you download the app, feel free to "friend" me and I will reciprocate.

The bad news is that it's Android only. I'm sure there are several iOS versions out there, but I doubt they talk across platforms.

Apple has one called "find my friends" but you choose who you want to view you. I used it once so my kids could watch me on a map. Is there management features which allow you to turn this on an off? There's no way, in hell, I'd be posting a link for anyone in the world to pin point me on a map.

Yes. You can stop all app activity. My only real interest is for SWIV as it might be fun to see sharks approaching the T&C and then the riders all over the place during the event.

I'm watching you run around your house at about .53mph. You need to speed it up a little bit!! Something scary about people you don't know watching you, ha ha
I'm leaving it on for friends to look at while I'm working from home. I should attach it to one my dogs. They never stop.

You can also edit the amount of trail people can see, how long at a time the trail data is collected, and how long it's available for viewing. It's pretty full featured for a free app. I splurged and spent $3 for the ad free version and had a nice chat with the app creator.
