So heatwave calls me today ~ he has an 09 CVO RG Custom also. 10,000 miles on the clock and he has a bad crank also ~ luckily they determined that when beginning the tear down for a stage III upgrade. Can't say I was surprised ~ I have know heatwave for many years he rides conservatively as do I ~ his did not make the racket mine was making but needs to be replaced. I advised to do as I am ~ timken/darkhorse or revolution upgrade. At least he will get a break on the labor with the stage III upgrade and upgrading the bottom end. You would think the moco could get this one figured out...

Can you describe the noise they make so I can keep an ear out for it?

I wasn't buying into any of the "Sky is Falling" threads on the 110s, until they signed me up when I wasn't lookin'

Actually the Service Dept. told me on the phone today that it had something to do with the front rod bearing, end result=new crank, just as we were going to install the SE Stage III Pro Kit~Damn the Luck :D:D:D

As Mitchdm said; we will probably spend some of that ESP labor $$ on some upgrades in the bottom end ;)

The '09 SERG wasn't making any noise that I'm not used to, and seemed to be running as good as it ever has when I took it in. Although the '09 seemed to have a lot more viberation in the seat and especially the handlebars, than Mitchdm's Skunk, when we swapped out on a ride to Kentucky last Oct.

My Tech probably found the issue when he had the jugs off and checked the rods, and it wasn't gone enough to start making a noise.

I'll know more when I go to the Dealer in the morning.
News and Pictures at 11:00...

'Guess I'll have to ride the '01 SwitchBlade 103 6sp, or (don't tell anybody here) the '05 SEEG BatWing to Thunder Beach next week.

Heatwaves's was not making noise ~ The Skunk However was KNOCKING, and you could hear it a block away ~ If you can hear it you will definitely know you have a problem with the bottom end. I rode it approximately 600 miles after the knock began and it ran just continued to get louder.

Usually the first symptom of a crank sissoring is excessive lifter noise that cannot be tamed.
That is from the pinion shaft running on it's own centerline, and is now gyro-ing the pump, causing loss of oil pressure to the lifters.

News Update: 'Checked out the rods in the '09 SERG 110 this AM and the front rod has 2x the lateral play as the rear.

My Tech said that he didn't hear anything either, but it wouldn't have been long before noise and failure.

'Spoke at length with My Tech, Service Mgr., & General Mgr., seperatly, and they all talked me out of upgrade parts for one reason or another, except My Tech, when I asked, gave the ok for the high tensile cylinder studs.

'Guess they don't want any more of my $$$ for "preventive measures".
They know that bike has 4.5 years of ESP left...

We were going to install the Torrington cam bearings anyway.

The cylinders looked new with no scuffs or scratches. He will run a hone and measure for the new pistons, and check everything else, including the oil pump, cam chest etc...

While the primary is off, he will check the compensator and pull the seal on the clutch to visual the tranny main bearing.

My Tech has finished installing the '10 and later fairing brackets and the HD cartridge fork kit.

'Should have all the kinks worked out when I get a new crank...

Last I heard the crank is the same as in the non-cvo models running 96" and 103"...
This is true ~ as is the camplate/oil pump. I am shooting for a dependable fast touring motor ~ yes they can be one in the same. The stage III on mine made it 16k which is not dependable and really not that fast.... If I would have known about the legnth of time to build a complete custom motor I would have ordered the se120r, and rebuilt the 110 at my leisure. Oh well you live & learn ~ just hope in the end it is worth it but I won't be able to answer this question for 100k or so (2-2.5 years :) ). As a sidenote I ride with a couple of retired guys on CVO's ~ the 11 CVO RG Ultra has 105k on it bone stock with no issues other than the compensator and headlight. The 10 CVO Street Glide was rebuilt at 118k (top end & cam chest) did not have to split the cases. Even though there were no o rings on the back of the oil pump from the factory. These guys ride The gent that has the 11 CVO RG Ultra let me borrow his 08 103 Ultra Classic ~ it has 140k on the clock and the engine is bone stock and never been into ~ only issue is the compensator was replaced. He quit riding it when he got the road glide ~ the 08 sits in my garage until I get the 12 cvo skunk back....

You guys need to go get a job... riding around all over the place like you have nothin to do.

Lucky bastiges. I say you should buy a 120R and use the 110 as a coffee table decoration waiting to perform back up duty if needed. You could rent it out to your bros while they wait for their 120Rs.

:D (green with envy clearly)
