I'm on a 09 RG and considering new shocks. I was wondering if anyone knows for sure the shortest fully compressed length shock that can be run. From progressive recommendations I could assume approx. 9.5" but I'm hoping it's lower.

I guess I could remove my stock shocks and lower the jack until tire and fender meet... then measure mount to mount and add 1/2" to 1", but maybe someone here has already done this and can save me an hour of wrenching.

Given the state of today's hiways/roads do you really want to ride a 'hard-tail'? I think anything shorter than 12" shocks will limit the shock rebound and give that type of ride. JMO.:eek:

Just thinking about it from the other direction to get most travel in a shorter shock.
If max compression is 9.5" then;
a 13" shock with 3.5" max travel
a 12" shock with 2.5" max travel
a 11" shock with 1.5" max travel

The max compression before tire / fender contact + shock travel = Shock length.

From Progressive..
PN...........Length...Compression...Travel... Spring Rate
444-4049.....12.0.......9.26..........2.74.....90-130
444-4058.....12.0.......9.76..........2.24.....115-155

Sounds like the number you got from progressive is the same number I got from Bitchin Baggers, I'm running 11-3/4 shocks now and they told me I have 2.5 inches of travel, another 1/4 and I'll be touching the tire, so if you add it up, it seems right.
