So, while I had the bike on the lift last night examining for cracks in my tire sidewalls (see izzi's thread), I spun the rear wheel by hand and heard a distinct tinkling/clicking sound from the rear wheel assembly. It does not seem to be related to the wheel being in one specific position or another, but just kind of a regularly irregular ticking as the wheel is slowly rotated. It is quiet- not a sound you would ever hear with the engine running or the bike on the road. I looked over the belt and it does not seem to be the problem.
My question is- is this what a bad bearing sounds like? I have a dealer appointment next Tuesday, but wanted to get he expert input here first.

usually when a bearing is going you'll here a rubbing metal to metal sound or a grinding sound.that's when one of those hand held infrared temperature sensors come in handy. you ride the bike, stop and shoot the area with the sensor, Hot = trouble. the new bikes have those rubber dampening thingies in the rear wheel. that could be what your hearing. good luck.

The cast wheels are hollow and on occasion they are not cleaned out very well. If any of the residue from the cast process is left inside the wheel, you will be able to hear it as it tumbles around in there.

Do not count out the wheel bearings ! I had the rear wheel bearings go out at 16K on my bike. It may be a surprise but the wheel bearings are made in China.

Thanks to everyone for the great info (as always). I will definitely remember the IDS as a possibility, in addition to the Chi-Com bearings.
If it is the bearings, is there any upgrade available that I could direct the dealer to install for the difference in part cost?
Last I checked the SE catalog, there were no SE rear wheel bearings. ;)

See what you can find from timken bearings. Try google, they make just about every type of bearing there is. If you had the bearing # they could cross reference it.

If your bike is under warranty let the HD dealer do the repair at no cost to you, unfortunately the dealer will install the OEM bearing. I now have over 24K on the replaced OEM bearings with no issues. If the bearing go out again I will go with the Timkin bearings because I am into my extended warranty and I have to pay $50 anyways. If it is the bearings talk to the dealer and see if you can upgrade to the Timkin bearing and pay them the difference in the cost.
