Today is teh day I get the new bike. Stereo is all stock. Here is what I need.

Head unit
Adapter rings
6.5" speakers
2 channel amp
mounting bracket for head unit
hand control module
splash guard for stereo

Let me know what you would do for this. I am leaning towards marine grade stuff as I ride every day and will eventually get caught in the rain. Thoughts on this?

Is the sound quality as good with marine grade speakers like the polk mm651's or are the infinity kappas way better? Everyone has their own opinion but I would like to build a killer sounding system at a reasonable price which I consider to be around $800-1000 for good components. I need a USB jack on teh front of the stereo and one on teh back would be nice too.

Last system was Alpine ida x 305 with kappas 6.5 front and +6x9 rears. I am not doing more than 2 speakers now as you cannot hear them enough to matter. At least that is my current opinion. I don;t want inner fairing speakers as that is too much hassle. I want to keep saddlbag space for stuff, not speakers.

I got the h donut rf pbr bracket on teh way. Do I need a particualr adapter ring? I read about someone needing to shave something down earlier. What is that? As plug and play as possible is preferable.

Thanks for all the help. I need this thing to rock at 90 mph.

Drew you are going to get all kinds of answers/help on this one.

Since your budget is 1k
Get one of the Sony head units you can normally catch them on sale Crutchfield
Adapter rings someone has some hog wired on here for 40 bucks shipped buy them before I buy them.
Amp since you are not doing inner fairing speakers get the arc mini the newer version bx has a fan and is stable down to 2 ohms so you can run 4 speakers off it. Plus it is 2x125watts..and will fit in the inner fairing. No bracket just some Velcro I promise it won't move.
You should be able to get those 3 items for under 350... Leaves you 650
100 for splash guard (I don't have one so this is a guess)
F the marine grade speakers unless you are going to just sit out in the rain or stand over your bike with a hose you can do without them.
Some good speakers about 400-500
150 left for the other items you mentioned.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

iPod tray USB up front can't remember on the back.
I have the 210 series 300 is Bluetooth
Also get the best set of component speakers you can afford for your 6.5

the PBR300x2 is 192w x 2 at least mine is

my second one 183w x 2 - ( at 2ohm, 135w x 2 at 4ohm )

I think going the PBR300x2, you gain a few things, cost saving, tons of power and remote EQ, also out of the way rigid installation, if you were the deciding to add the extra speakers, you mentioned the bracket which also helps position the amp for cooling

bridge stacked components will give you the best sound and weather features by way of sealed cones, I am talking about the hawg wired ZX speakers.

speakers are where you want to spend your money.

but I'm not saying buy a $900 set of morels or focals either.

it's a bike, and will be harsh at times, so companies geared toward bikes have those advantages.

HAT tweeters are a little bright, but i57-2 has some real nice bump, but again that from the bags also.

the i57-2 from HAT are about $350 a pair - but they're just speakers in a box

hog tunes makes a 5x7 ring, but I think you have to do the kit, not sure

then your at 2ohm v 4ohm

4ohm speakers are better for running in parallel, from a 12v standpoint and current amp configs for high and full range, 2ohm peak usable output usually highest

I'm still back at another set of kappa's would be good.

polkMM are high output also.

just keep in mind, they're not components, so can collect moisture more readily.

but you can't go wrong with the ZX, they'll back you up if something happens and a relatively a steal considering the quality. those are only 90db though, but 250w max v. 94db with the kappas and the same for the MM's

tough choice.

here's a scenario

you have $200 into the rockford with bracket and remote PEQ dial

spend another $300 on a set of ZX

leaves $500 fo radio and cradle, about right, but $350 might do it

if it's still not jamming enough, you can either add a set of inner fairing wall speakers, I recommend the $30 pioneer TS-G1644R based on timber match to the ZX

or you can purchase a set of $150/pr massive audio M6B 97db woofers and replace the hawg wired woofers to just make it really loud

IToldu & Donut gave you some great info..Here's my $0.02.

Head unit: to many choices, I prefer high-end Kenwood.

Amps: to many choices as well. It really Depends on your mounting location. I love JL Audio, but a lot of people use the alpine 4/500.

Speakers, to many choices.. Make sure you select a well made set, high RMS, are 2 or 3 way speakers & have a built in or attached crossovers.

Try to make sure you are aware of the ohms of the headunit, speakers & amps. You want them to match up.. Ex, 2 or 4ohms. your choice will impact your sound & the longevity of your equipment.

Radio Cradle, control harness & speaker adapter, I recommend HW.

Radio cover, not to many choices. I used Sidecar cycle. It's over prices until you need it.. LoL

Get quality gauge speaker wires.. Walmart had the best prices for me.

Use 4-8 gauge wire for positive & negative wire from the battery to the fuse block then to the amp.

Fuse distribution block that has 4 gauge going in & 4-8 gauge wire out.

Good set of RCA cables, no cheap ones. I got mine from Radio Shack.

Good luck... I'll be calling you soon for a set of rims.

We will all give close to the same ideas I figure.

Radio (I went with Alpine with bluetooth because they are $100-$150 and good)
Cradle (Hawg Wired) $250 with the harness included
Harness Adapter (Hawg Wired)
Speaker Adapter (Hawg Wired) $40 on classified
Amp (Rockford PBR 300x2 with EQ knob) $170 on Amazon with knob
Amp Mount (Contact H-Donut) $40
Speakers (Up to you. I'm running a pair of JBL MS-62cin stock location but have also ran Hertz ESK165. They are both great speakers. JBL have a little more Treble.) These are $250-$350 depending on where you get them from.

With this said its all an opinon but at the high numbers equal $1000 plus whatever your amp wiring cost, and a splash guard which is $100 from side car cycles. But you can do it for under $1000.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. There are so many choices out there. The stock system is terrible but at least I can hear at speed at full volume. Too many choices out there. It seems I will get 1 part at a time due to budgetary constraints. Not even sure what I am going to start with. I like the Alpine I had on the other bike ida 305. It is a bit pricier than a lot of other stuff out there but I only want to buy one head unit etc. I have told myself nothing will be added until the bike is paid off but not sure I can make it that long. We'll see how the stock system fares with Pandora on the way to work tomorrow.

All those guys gave great advice.
I have a Sony deck with tune tray.
Two hawg wired PSC3004s
JL C5 6.5 in factory spots
Rockfords 6.5" in the inner
Polks in the lowers
Hertz Highpower 6x9 in the bags

it all gets rained on with no problems. wouldn't pay extra for marine grade.

I got a hawg wired PSC1502 amp that I will sell for $160 shipped if you want it. it's a 150x2 and it will drive the shit out of 4 ohm speakers.

Hat i57-2

For what it's worth, I have a J&M 500w Amp with Rokers in the front and I just switched out the rear speakers in the bags for the Hats i57-2 and what a difference!!! Fit was perfect for the HD lids. I was going to put subs in the bags this winter, Not now with the hats, the sound/bass is Awesome and I can hear them easily at 75 mph on the highway. I bought them direct from HAT and they only cost $175.00 + shipping.

If you don't want to search for deals all over the net go to Crutchfield for the radio and kit. I prefer Alpine decks and if you buy one from them you can get the dash kit and bar control interface for $39 which is a steal. For speakers Ive tried jl audio, Rockford, polk audio, hogtunes, and J&M before and none of these come close to the Hertz speakers. I have 2 sets of Hertz components in the fairing and in the process of adding another set in the bag lids. Im running a Massive Audio NX2 on top of the Alpine deck to the two sets in the fairing and will probably add another to my bags one back from paint to the rear ones. ive never once had this amp overheat or shut down in over a year and I push it pretty hard.

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_142HD7000B/Scosche-HD7000B-Factory-Integration-Adapter-for-Harley-Davidson.html?tp=3486 says $79 but if you order a radio the price drops to $49. I have a friend who just installed this on his and works great. Im using the biketronics kit on my bike and it was a lot more and I like the way this kit fits and looks better than mine.

I can get J&M stuff at dealer cost if I want. I'm looking for something different. I am thinking it might be a bit of time till I get my act together on this stereo. Maybe pay the bike off first and then do this. Logic seems to be prevailing in my life right now which is highly odd for m.

But i do have my bracket for the RRF PBR ready to go. A guy came by the shop yesterday with a JVC touchscreen unit, 6.5 Infinity Kappa's int eh fairing, 2 6x9 kappas in each bag and an Alpine amp and that system was by far the best I have heard in person. What I like best about it was that it could be unplugged inside the bags and the wires were not routed through the bags but instead they shaved a little bit off the top rear of the bag for the wires to run so literally 5 seconds and the bags could be off. The way my 05 was was a complete nightmare to get the bags off.

I should have taken some pics but I was so taken by how nice it sounded I didn't even think to. When the guy told me he paid $2800 for everything installed I thought half of that must have been labor.

speakers are more than half the battle

there was one guy with a bat nose in laconia last year, slightly louder than what I had, by just a click or two

he said he was running 4 kappas, 95db speakers v. 90db speakers I run

my only drawback on coaxials is the way they handle water pooling and that sort of thing.

I've felt like a submarine commander a few times this season, and not complaining as many areas of the country are getting ravaged by weather

there's nothing stated saying you can't buy the extended service on the speakers, maybe good insurance on the bike.

Seeing as I just got a new painted inner fairing it's time to order my stereo. I still have no idea what to get. I need 2 speakers a head unit and am getting an rf prb300x2. I guess teh Kappa's worked well in the last bike plug I can get them and a head unit at Best Buy with my BB cc.

Will these speakers work? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Kappa+6-1/2%22+2-Way+Car+Speakers+with+Aluminum+Woofer+Cones+(Pair)+-+Silver/1306558264.p?id=mp1306558264&skuId=1306558264&st=infinity%20kappa&cp=1&lp=5They seem kind of pricey but they can go on the cc.

Then all I need is the adapter rings. Thoughts? I am going to do everything at once so i don;t ahve to keep tearing down the fairing, plus I will not do the polk mm651's as there ahve been too many issues with them. Thanks for any and all help.

For the head unit I am thinking this one. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Kenwood+-+CD+-+Built-In+Bluetooth+-+Built-in+HD+Radio+-+In-Dash+Receiver/7501069.p?id=1218848535439&skuId=7501069
