I'll be in Yosemite for 4 days beginning on Memorial Day. I've plotted my course out there but not my way back. I'm thinking about leaving the National Park and hitting the coast around Monterrey and taking the PCH south a ways before turning east towards home (Texas). I rode a lot of the PCH in 2009 but peeled off at Lucia.

I want to end up on I-40 and loop north through Utah before curving south.

Anyway, at what point does SoCal traffic become intolerable? I want no part of LA... Any nice routes off of 1/ 101 to 40, say between Santa Barbara and Barstow? Or can I continue even further south before the populous gives me claustrophobia?

Thanks in advance.

You can catch either highway 150 off of PCH at Rincon Road and ride to/through the Lake Casitas area, or catch highway 33 that will take you through Ojai. Go from there to 126, which will take you over to Castaic, where you can catch 14, the Antelope Freeway. That will take you to Palmdale, and from there you can either go up to Mojave and over towards the 40 at Barstow or head over to Victorville, then up the 15 to the 40 at Barstow. That avoids all the nutjobs on LA area freeways and gets you some scenic and fun roads.

You could go a little further south on PCH to Malibu (riding Muholland is worth the effort), but anywhere south of there, the claustrophobia is likely to kick in.

There are alot of good routes you could take. How long do you want to take on getting to Barstow 15/40? Here are a couple.

If you have any questions let me know. The last one has Nacimiento Fergusson Rd coming off the coast. It is a must ride road if yo our on HWY 1. I am sure most will agree that have ridden it. It is Beautiful. NOT FAST at all so if you are looking to make time choose one of the other routes. I know I did not take you all the way to Santa Barbara, but after San Luis Obispo till Malibu it is all Highway.

Thanks!

Actually, Nacimiento Rd at Lucia is where I got off of the PCH back in '09. Ironically I has headed to Yosemite- I had a camping spot reserved at a Corps of Engineers site near Merced. Didn't make good enough time to make it so I got a hotel room and decided to bring it on home to Austin after that.

It was a fun climb up over the mountains and across the National Guard post.

Thanks for the links!
