I have an 06 road glide. Was riding yesterday and the check engine and battery light came on. When I shut down, waited a few minutes and then restarted they both cleared. I read that the battery light means that it is either over or under charging. I need to know what would cause the check engine light to come on.

Read the codes, write them down, then clear them. Check the date on the battery and see how old it is. Old AGM's can cause voltage issues, even though the scooter starts fine.

After that put a VOM on the battery and see what the voltage is with the engine off, at idle, and at 2500 rpm. If its less than 12.2 off, you'll need to charge it up first. At idle it should be more than about 13. At 2500 it should be 14 to 14.6 volts

Tighten the battery cables while you are at the battery. If you find a loose one, that might be all it needs.

If the voltages are good, and the charge lamp goes out, and the codes are just under or over voltages ride it and see if the codes return.

If you find burnt out parts in the charging system, or that battery is more than two years old (or a brand with a suspect pedigree) you should run a sulfate test on it. Pull it down to 12 volts with the load tester, then charge it at 30 amps. If the voltage runs up past 17.5 while on the battery charger, its sulfated, and should be replaced.

If its not charging, you'll need to run through the no charge trouble ladder in the manual. Basically test the stator output (AC volts) and a couple of circuits from the regulator. Check the pins on the stator pig tail for burning.

What kind of voltage issues are caused by the AGM battery? I recently had a similar issue.
I was riding to work one morning and had just got on I95 and by chance looked down to check my speed and noticed both Eng light and Battery Lights on. A quick glance at the voltmeter and it was reading less than 12V. I keep the bike on a tender and it started up fine that morning. I was only riding 8 minutes tops. I headed home and when I parked it the voltmeter was reading 14V. Put it back on the tender and took the truck to work.
When I got home I checked the battery, it had 12.8 V. I checked the stator- not grounded and I was getting 56Vac from each prong of the stator plug at 3000 rpm. I assumed it was the regulator/rectifier that was bad and replaced it with a Cycle electric regulator. I have over 100 miles on the new regiulator and have not had any codes or any warning lights come on. At cold idle and while riding the voltmeter reads +14V Once the engine gets hot voltage at idle drops to around 13V. Does this sound normal? I had a stator go on me before and I don't know if it was just time or if a bad battery or regulator caused it. Don't want to do that again.

Usually they show a high voltage at full charge. Vehicle will start fine, but will start killing light bulbs and electronics.

Oh crap. My bike has a Duracel AGM. I didn't see a date on it. I'll keep a close eye on it and see if it will get me through the season. Thanks!
