Well, Yesterday the wife and I finally had the chance for a long ride. And I had the opportunity to use the cruise control after just having the 15000 mile service done. The cruise control kept shutting down after a short period of time of being on. I just wanted to shoot this information out there to see if others had this happen to them and some possible solutions. Can it have something to do with the brakes or the brake adjustment? Or is there a cruise control adjustment? I haven't looked at it yet but I will and post later. Please reply with all input to let others know as well.

Most of the time when you see this the front brake switch (on hand brake) is failing. When they go bad hitting a bump will be enough to shut the cruise off.

Look at switches. Hand brake, foot brake, clutch lever all have switches that cancel the cruise. Also check your power source to the cruise. Does the cruise light remain on once it shuts off? Can you simply hit the button to set it again, or do you have to toggle the main switch?

This happened on my 09 within the first 1,500 miles. It was working perfectly, and then at the end of a long ride, it started turning itself off. I'd reset the master switch, and then it would work, for a while, then it would shut itself off again. After cycling through this process 3-4 times, it would no longer work at all. Nothing.

I took it to the dealer, and the service writer read the error code, looked it up and said it was something about a bad signal from the cruise control switch. They ordered me a new switch and replaced mine under warranty a couple weeks later.

I'm up to 15k miles now and never had another issue with it.

Can you check for error codes and see if the bike recorded anything?

First of all, Thanks for all the quick replies. And today I rode and didn't have a problem.

Sincecrazy,I will check all the switches as you said. I don't think the cruise light stayed on when it shut down. But, I was able to reset it each time it shut down. The main switch stayed on from what I can remember. Thanks again.

Its a relay sensor! Take it to the Stearlership and ask them to plug it in. Error code should appear.

If you notice it not working again,.. look and see if your tail lights are on. If so, its the brake sensor on the hand lever. I had mine break last night when I changed out to my new bars. I could get my cruise to work if I played with the hand brake lever and find the sweet spot, but if I hit a bump or used the front brakes it would stop again until I found the sweet spot again. $65 bucks later, and soldering a new one in it works good as new.
My mechanic told me they break really easy, so be careful when you change out your levers. Its not much fun to repair either. Might not be your problem, but something to look for.

It could be that you blew the fuse. All those things you mentioned are all connected into one fuse. Its strange that your cruise light is still coming on though,.. that shouldn't be working if your fuse blew. Thats something easy to check out,.. after that I'm not sure what might be the problem.

Could be, your service guy at the dealer can look and tell you without tearing into the bike. I think if I tried to explain it, I would only confuse you. :)

Well, Let me start by saying. I thought all was good until I went to Myrtle Beach for bike week. It's about 1.5 hours from my house. So, I really wanted the cruise. But it didn't work at all that time. The main switch came on but nothing with the hand controls. So, I got with a friend of mine (Dave) from BOBO's speed and custom Summerville,S.C. (great people). He said to disconnect the 2 connections from the Idle cable (just in front of tank)on the cruise control ROLL-OFF SWITCH w/BOOT. And the cruise control works fine now. What this bye passes I'm not sure. I will look at the wiring diagrams to see if I can figure it out. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome. Thanks Dave.:D

You've bypassed the switch that shuts off the cruise control when you force the throttle closed in an emergency. It's another safety feature used when you don't want to pull in the clutch or tap the brakes.

Does this mean all that I need to do is change the Idle cable? Because I've heard that the cable grounds out and is worn out inside causing it to ground out.

I think so, yes. I haven't had a chance to visit the dealer yet to get one for mine, but I believe the switch is part of the cable and can't be ordered separately.

Try adjusting the throttle/idle cables (slackening them) a bit.

I had the same problem on my 03, and that cured it. The problem happens when you are crusing along with your hand resting on the throttle. Then you hit a small bump, or shift your hand just enough to slightly roll off the throttle, and the roll-off switch does it's job.

As stated above, I would not recommend bypassing the switch. It's there for a reason...

Good Luck, and I hope this helps...

On the way up to the 105th my low fuel light quit working and then the cruise eventually died. Bought a throttle rocker to get home until I could check the connections and even bought a new switch. ($31.00) When I reseated the cable to the tach everything came back. Simple fix for all that grief.

I know that my cruise shuts off at 140 kmh (87 mph) - I'm assuming that it is designed to do that. At least I hope it is. How fast you crusing at when it shuts off?

It suck because when its near 140 kmh and when i go down hill, it shuts-off!
