Greetings All,
I'm still thinking about the great time I had in Daytona during this year's Bikeweek. Good meeting the folk I met at our meetup Tuesday afternoon. But I'm starting to plan for Sturgis this year. I've never been. For those who have, can you give me the pros and cons of staying in Rapid City and Deadwood. I am particularly interested in comments from people who have stayed in Rapid City. Is it too far away from Sturgis and area activities. My option in Deadwood is more expensive and not as nice as my Rapid City option. Thanks in advance.

PS. I'll be posting pictures and updating the profile later this week.

Deadwood is 20 minutes from Sturgis and rapid is 35 minutes. Rapid is interstate and Deadwood is highway. I will say this there are more people killed on the road between deadwood and Sturgis then between Sturgis and rapid. there are alot of things going on during the week in both places. and you can stay busy ether place. Deadwood is very cool. I enjoy going over there. For me if I had the $$$ I would stay in deadwood or Hillcity. just my .02

I'd stay in Deadwood. You'll spend most of your time at the rally, but Deadwood is a cooler place to be when you're not than Rapid City is.

Rapid City is probably quieter than Deadwood, and there is alot going on in Rapid City. The convention center is there and you can test ride the new HD's from there and the HD Dealer in Rapid City is one of the big rally points to visit with a bunch of vendors on display.

Deadwood is like taking a step back in time to the ole wild west. If you like to gamble there are casinos and plenty to eat and drink. Deadwood is just a cool a$$ town. I don't know that you could go wrong either way, but personally I would prefer Deadwood.

We stayed in Rapid City last year. Sorta seemed like a central location to everything. One direction was Sturgis, the other direction was Mt Rushmore.

Thanks Tracey. How would you describe the night life in Rapid City for bikers during Sturgis?

We only stayed 2 nights there. We went on to other states after that. We stayed at the Days Inn on Jackson Blvd. Had you not known the rally was going on you would have never suspected it. There were several bikes staying at the hotel but it was very quiet all around.

rapid city was ok to stay at, didn't seem like it was 35 minutes to Sturgis but maybe it was... good restaurants and bars, plenty to do. but deadwood would be much more fun to stay at, much more to do within walking distance for night life

Waacko pretty much nails it. I'm more into riding and stayed at the Super 8 on Rushmore Rd in RC on my last trip and it worked out great. I just turned left out of the driveway and I was a half hour from the scenic routes. If I was going to spend a lot of time in Sturgis or planned on riding home from the bars late, I'd stay closer in.

The biggest difference is RC is the biggest city in the region so it has motels, malls, restaurants, etc. Deadwood is a small town set up for tourists.

Deadwood is a cooler town for sure, but as someone pointed out previously, the route between Deadwood and Sturgis is deadly - literally. I would be sure to not ride that section at dawn or dusk, as the deer are almost as numerous as the bikes.
