I am getting ready to do my first oil change myself and would like some of your opinions. 2012 RG and on the last oil change I switched to synthetic and noticed the engine was louder meaning a knock or chatter. Should I stick with synthetic or go with conventional oil. One guy told me he uses Rotella. So what oils do you use in all 3 holes? Thanks.

I currently run Amsoil in all three holes, however, I'm looking to find some Redline for the primary. At first some chatter, but then it quiets down.. Could be in the mind...

I run redline motor, transmission, and primary oils. I pick it up on racerparts warehouse. It usually ships for free. I buy it on sale. I am not claiming that it is better, I just never had any problems while using it in multiple bikes over 500,000 miles. Ran it in my racebikes as well. Like Kevin Constner said in Bull Durham "respect the streak." Pretty much any brand of oil is fine as long as you change it regularly.

What ever you use, use a full synthetic in the engine, Redline Shock proof int he tranny, the best there is and will quieten it down. In the primary you can use the motor oil you put in the engine or use a primary specific oil. I have never had any problem running the Amsoil, Redline, or Liqui-Moly synthetic motor oil in my engine and primary.

Redline

Another vote for Redline, in all three holes. Shockproof in the tranny, I use their V-Twin 20-50 or 20-60 in the engine and V-Twin Primary oil in the primary.
Good stuff. You can even buy it on Amazon! LOL

I also use Redline Motor Oil and buy it from Racer Parts Wholesale too.
I run their 20/60 in the engine, and their shock proof in the tranny.
I run Non Synthetic Type F ATF in the primary.

Another Redline vote, all three holes. Change motor and primary every 5k and the tranny only twice, (31,000 miles on bike). No problems and happy.

I'm sticking with HD Syn3 and the thought process above. If HD makes some extra profit so be it. Seems from the news lately that FWIW, this little bit of give back to the Moco in today's economic times helps the company that makes the bikes we all love.

It does not make one bit of difference.
Redline shock proof heavy is a great product, but to thick for HD transmission unless you live in a dessert 100% of the time.

I would like to know what you base your claims on. Bert Baker the transmission giant backs this product for use in their transmission as does others. I personally have not heard of one tranny failure with anyone using shockproof and it being the cause. Please enlighten me if have you have any info to the contrary. I've have used this product with nothing but good things to say as, quieter shifting, reduced neutral rattle, as well as the tranny temps are down considerably. If there is a better product, I don't know about it.

Have you ever tried to pour Redline shock proof heavy when it was 30 degrees. You can ride for hours and it is still like peanut butter.
I used Redline in high heat areas great product. The HD transmission is lubed a lot by lube flowing down Shock proof Heavy is just to thick.
Quiet is meaningless we use to put saw dust in gear boxes to quiet them. That does not mean it was good for them.
I never said Redline was not a good product. How and when it is used makes a difference.

Looks to be 3 different Redline ShockProof oils available. Heavy, Lightweight, and Superlight... Where I live, think I'm going with the middle one. More research to come... Have a great weekend everyone.

You are the first I've heard with this sort of problem with the shockproof. It is thick even in warmer weather but not sure in colder weather it actually gets thicker. Something to think about for sure. I've been using it for at least 12 years in all four of my bikes with no problems and smooth shifting transmissions. Thanks for the heads up. I will do some research and see if I can find some more on this.
