Thought I would post a little update since I am waiting for the pipes to cool down to do my install of the GEN4 tuner. I have been lurking here for sometime and have read some great posts and learned some excellent tips thought I would give my contribution of this experience good or bad. Personally I am approaching my mods on my bike practically. I am not looking to be the fastest but hoping if all turns out well to be using my brain and experience putting together just a good running 103 FLTRX on a budget the runs better than most stage 1's. My first and only mod to date has been to remove the catalytic converter now many can read about performance gains from 1000.00 pipes and mufflers but my personal experience with this simple 80.00 mod leads me to believe that 75% of any gains are earned by removal of the cat (not to mention a increase in the exhaust note with stock mufflers) this totally changed the drivability and performance of my bike drastically. I am so pleased I will not be changing the head pipes air filter or mufflers until the tuner is installed and I see how things go, she's lean for sure... they're all lean we know this. If possible I will dyno the bike to see the results of just the tuner and cat removal.
I think it is worth noting I was unaware that the Gen4 comes preprogrammed with Dobeck's preferred air/fuel ratios with good baselines that may require little or no tinkering (the air/fuel ratio stays at the predetermined setting and auto corrected even if I add a performance air filter and mufflers I am told, it has closed loop and open loop modes automatic based on load and throttle) although it is all very easy and no computer required, not to mention I will be able to monitor the air/fuel ratio at all times with the gauge that replaces the temp gauge conveniently in the fairing.
One other thing to note because I was a little skeptical of this new unit Chris at Dobeck agreed to have a bypass plug installed on the unit that if I should encounter ANY issue I simply unplug the unit and install the jumper plug not a bad idea and instilled enough confidence for me to go ahead and try it.
Well those pipes should be cooled down enough to remove to install the 02 sensor now... Keep you guys posted on the progress...

This tuner looks like the best "Fuel Type" tuner out there if it does what it claims. But it is still limited in what it does since it only add or removes fuel and makes no changes to front or rear cyl or timing.

keep us up dated on how you like it.

Well I was hoping to report good news however I ran into a dilemma a 45 degree oxygen sensor bung will not permit the proper installation angle of the O2 sensor, they need to be installed with a minimum 10 degree pitch of the tip down, this prevents moisture from accumulating in the sensor and staying there when cooling on cool evenings (that eventually damages the sensor) this is especially important with straight through mufflers... Many have likely did this wrong... the head pipe is at a 55 degree angle on the jiffy stand so when cooling I need 20 more degrees to do this just not enough material to accomplish it despite the effort. I am hoping to see the correct bung soon they need to make it since they do not exist all I have seen is flat and 45 I may just make one myself. The photo shows 10 degrees the wrong direction! I sort of wonder if aftermarket pipes are made correctly??? The photos of the old style H.D. pipes I have seen look correct.

Why does the O2 sensor go in the front pipe? it will only read the AFR from that cyl and the front cyl is very different than the rear. Cant the sensor be installed after the collector to make adjustments to the overall AFR?

I asked the same questions myself to Chris at Dobeck he is the engineer. It all made perfect sense I would suggest calling him for I do not want to loose anything in translation, and after speaking with him I am sure you will agree. One quote that I remember perfectly is he asked me what happens to the air/fuel ratio when the rear cylinder shuts down at idle when the engines hot? I said you have a point there. He also told me how to disable the rear cylinder shut down, which I am not going to do.

If you use a closed exhaust you can install the sensor in the collector, and I'm going to do that now thanks to your question, because I am starting with the stock mufflers (I don't like attention when I twist it) and it will work that way they told me this so now I am going to install a second bung there!!! Thanks for making me think! However with straight through exhausts you will get an inaccurate reading there because as the engine pulses it sucks air back in hence if I end up doing that I will have the bung already installed in the front head pipe and just move it.

Also when I spoke with Chris he explained everything H.D. has figured out in the stock ECU regarding timing etc.. (do they have something figured out on the difference between front and rear cylinders? I wonder, in my opinion this still has to be better than just a map because of the closed loop operation) We discussed this because I was real close to purchasing a T-Max I guess the determining factor was there unit has the ability to map fuel based on engine load that's what makes this different from other fuel controllers... Not just throttle position and rpm. Going up hill or with a head wind will require more fuel at the same throttle position and rpm... And in my opinion also at different temps/humidity level...

I looked closely at ever tuner out there. My personal conclusion was I wanted something that would correct air/fuel ratio in whatever conditions I was riding rather it be a 50 degree evening or a 100 degree day.. I knew if I choose the Power Vision I would end up playing with maps when the weather changed and likely ended up adding the auto tune option available then that lead me to the T-Max... With both it meant remapping every time I made a mod. Since my preference is doing this in stages that seemed like a hassle... I swore I was going to leave this thing alone when I bought it but the first time I rode on a 90 degree day I came home and bought the cat less head pipe it ran so much better I then became concerned about the air/fuel ratio, I want to do this in stages and the minimum, only till I'm pleased and if I end up doing an air filter... I just put it on and go same with mufflers or cams (Chris did caution me on different cams and said if I do them to consider his recommendations) also I did not want a computer screen on the handle bar, just my preference, I don't want that distraction when I'm riding but glancing at the gauge on the dash is not bad to me and I can pull over and make adjustments if I so desire... It is real simple to say lean it out a little for fuel milage on a highway trip.

Who knows it may be a flop! But I hope not! It is worth noting they offer discounts as follows, I received one. Also there is a 50.00 discount for members of the H.D. Forum... Maybe we can get one for Road Glide forum... I will ask if things work out well.

Anyone welding a bung in there exhaust take note to properly install a bung at a 10 degree minimum incline as recommended to allow any condensation that may collect in the exhaust and find it's way into the 02 sensor while cooling you need a 60 degree bung, the stock head pipes are at a 55 degree angle... Tack welded and test fit tonight all back to the welder in the AM... Hoping to get fire in it tomorrow! Install of the system was a breeze baring the wrong bung...

It is not possible to install the wide band 02 sensor in the collector at any kind of angle as recommended.

No one seems to be interested in this unit! lol... Understandable if your not using it! However I feel I need to properly conclude this post. Aside from the 02 sensor bung originally being the wrong angle... Install was a piece of cake I sort of planned the install around the fairing removal so I also upgraded to Rokker speakers without the amp a decent upgrade there, also installed the l.e.d. Day Maker headlamps also a a decent upgrade. Was sorta anxious so I saved the Ness adjustable bars, progressive fork upgrade, six piston Jaybrake calipers and Lyndall composite rotors until the next rainy weekend is upon us, besides I still need grips and a couple other small items for that all to go smooth.

Anyhow the tuner results, initially I took it for a ride with the base settings... started up and ran fine... on a hard roll on I encountered a little surging and also when coasting and wacking it open under load nothing serious but it ran damn good for what it is before any tuner was installed, it sounded fat or rich. I stopped and installed the by-pass plug and plugged in the stock 02 sensors... Although the tuner is installed at this point it is totally bypassed with the exception of the jumper plugs added to the injectors so baring a plug connector problem you are back to square one I rode some and it ran as it always has so I really was not worried. I made a phone call to Dobeck in the A.M. the phone was answered promptly and I proceeded to explain what I had encountered... Nick and I spoke for a little while and discussed the function of the tuner in deeper details I suppose 30 years of dealing with a rack of 4 carburetors and all that is involved with properly tuning them made this easy. We decided since the bike is essentially stock minus the cat to alter the adjustments, the base settings are more for a full stage one as I figured... I CAN NOT EXPRESS HOW EASY THIS IS TO DO!!! I actually was laughing to myself thinking about pulling fuel bowls changing pilots, mains, adjusting needles and synchronizing in less time than it takes to type this sentence... Six modes 3 for open loop and 3 for closed loop... done! No computers, no down loads no USB wires no hooking up ANYTING! I LIKE THAT!!! Made the adjustment in less than a minute and went for a ride... surging gone, performed good for the short ride before some rain drops started to fall. I really do not think one is to expect a whole lot of performance from a tuner on a stock bike with only the cat removed, if you disagree I would be interested in hearing your comments based on experience.

All things considered I believe for me... this works, I know my bike is not lean and that is about all I was after... It will never be a question because of the gauge. I wish I could operate the gauge without the tuner functioning so I could actually see where the mixture is before it is being corrected through the tuner... But that's not possible unless I rent the tool the have... However that would be interesting.

I plan to install a free flowing air filter run it see how it goes and more than likely mufflers and them cams, thats just the way I am choosing to do things ... I am fairly confident that the more I use this and tweak things it will serve me well WITHOUT A BUNCH OF HEADACHES. LOL.... and that to me is priceless!

Well just one more quick note.... The rain clouds cleared and took it for another ride there is a marked increase in performance especially notable in the exact areas I originally had the surging noted above this motor loves fuel when cranked on thats for sure...
