Has anyone wrapped their exhaust and then put the heat shields back on over the top?
I recently pulled my chrome heat shields and slip-on's off and had them ceramic coated black. Was thinking about wrapping the exhaust and then putting the shields back on. The wrap would be more for function as it would not be seen once the shields were back in place.
Question is...
1. Is there "Function" in wrapping the pipes?
Thinking maybe the shields would be a little cooler and not melt my boot heal getting rubber crap all over the shield.
2. Wondering if the heat shields will actually fit over the top of the wrap once it's in place. I am thinking so but maybe not...

The wrap is only $20 and maybe an hour of time so if no value I would be interested in peoples opinion.

I'd say the space between the heat shields and the pipe is to keep the shields cooler. If you wrap the pipe the shields would be the same heat as the pipe. I've wrapped pipes but never had shields over top of it. The wrap kept some heat in the pipes and if I got boots close enough to melt it was not noticeable on the wrap.

I've wrapped pipes but never had shields over top of it. The wrap kept some heat in the pipes and if I got boots close enough to melt it was not noticeable on the wrap.
I think the air gap would remain the same as they use hose clamps around the pipe to hold the shields on, so the pipe would just be like an eighth larger with the wrap so the clamp would be on top of that so the gap between the hose clamp and the shield would remain the same.
It would be a royal pain to try and thread the wrap with the shields already in place.

You have a point there. And a pain to get the shields back on after wrapping. I've always used one or the other, so it's all assumption on my part how both together might work. Lol.

I've heard some people say that wrapping them up can trap moisture and that some, after a couple years pull their wrap off and have pretty significant rust underneath.

I had a 2-1 exhaust split at the welds after using header wrap for a year. Your experience may differ but I wouldn't do it again.

Done many a wrap and while they look cool, they really do fuck up the pipes....not to mention, smell like burnt hair when they get wet, smell like burnt hair when they are setting in and shield ZERO heat - My last Wide Glide had a wrap and loved the look but HATED red lights as my leg would fry - My old FXDX had a wrap too and it was nice but it ruined my 2:1 TH - See ZERO value in a wrap and then Heat Shields.

Bike you are about = SANS Wrap
