at the request of a friend up in Ontario we are making a 3 week trip along historic Route 66 from here in Chicago to L.A. starting out Fri June 15th back in Chitown July5th.

Once out west we plan to do Pacific Coast Hwy (my 3rd time) and turn east just south of San Fran into Yosemite National Park ending up in Reno.

This is where it gets interesting and I appeal for feedback... Cam's brother lives in Missoula Montana and so now he wants to make it there for a visit also but this is about 14hours away north-east...

Do we slab it on the Interstates and pound it out? I95 or I80 & I15N or I80 & US93N? Are there alternate routes worth the extra time considering the routes I listed are 14hr rides each already?

Up until yesterday his brother wasn't going to be home and so the plan was to head back east after Yosemite but this Missoula chews up some major time and adds significant miles but seeing his brother would no doubt be a highlight of the trip for as often as any of us are near Montana.

I plan to do the Beartooth on way back... but time will be tight on the roads home now...

Thoughts? Feedback?

Yosemite is going to be a zoo that time of year - LOTS of cars and people.

Hiway 1 north from LA is awesome up until Monterey, after that there's a lot of traffic. You may as well start heading east toward Yosemite there. From Yosemite, I assume you're taking 395 to Reno.

From Reno you can take 80 to Winnemucca, then head north on 95. Take 95 through Nevada, into Oregon, then Idaho. Stay on 95 until you get to Grangeville, then cut off on a short stretch (approx 20 mi.) of State Hiway 13 which will take you to Hiway 12. Hiway 12 is the road to Lolo Pass, one of the best motorcycle roads in the PNW and a great ride. Hiway 12 will take you to Lolo, which is about 10 miles directly south of Missoula.

95 is not exactly a freeway and will be pretty good in many places. In eastern Oregon and Idaho you should have pretty light traffic. That area is very sparsely populated and lightly travelled.

If it were me that's the way I would go.

Many thanks on the suggested routes... I had been plotting some out on the Garmin but it's tough to know traffic and scenic routes.

Appreciate the feedback...

Left Chitown last Sat and arrived in L.A. thursday. Rode PCH Friday stayed in San Luis Obispto... Sat up to Carmel and made it to Los Banos for the night. Today was hwy 120 through Yosemite and up amazing 395 to Carson City.

Oil change tomorrow and around Lake Tahoe then heading to Missoula... On the route suggested.

It's been and amazing trip so far! Hotter than hell from Chicago to Barstow over 100F each day but the west coast has been mid 60's full sun since Marina Del Ray... Excellent roads and great people.

Plan is to roll into Missoula and stay with friend's brother on Wed and head for Beartooth en route to Sturgis and Deadwood Satuday. I need to be in the office July 5th.

In my cage, I just love I-94. I have yet to try it on my bike. It is a lot more open and nicer than I-90. I have stayed in Missoula a few times and it is a nice town, well worth a side trip in my mind but not if it takes you too far out of your way.
While you are on the US-66 route, don't miss out on the historic Munger Moss hotel in Lebanon Missouri. It gives a flavor of the old route 66 and is very reasonably priced.
