For 2023.5-up Touring running on one cylinder

Hey everyone. Just found this issue after getting my ass kicked by a cylinder randomly dropping out on a bike with no codes showing.

This is the factory coil wiring. It’s
retained with a Christmas tree zip tie and then folded back on itself and zip tied again. Bike was randomly dropping a cylinder with no codes. Thought it was in my tune, kept checking, wasn’t finding anything. Happened to push on this plug while the bike was running (thinking I didn’t have it snapped on) and both cylinders started firing, let go and a cylinder dropped out. Found this when I pulled it apart…

Three of the 4 coil wires broken. So, I recommend if you have a 23.5-up center cooled touring bike, you cut the bottom zip tie that is folding the wires back over. Just passing this along to hopefully help others.

I am beside myself that the assembly line and/or quality control would let that go. Wires just can't bend like that and be expected to go the distance. Crazy that it wouldn't trip a code at some point or at least flag a historical code due to how intermittent the connection sounds.
Good post, hopefully those with the newer models see this before they end up with an issue.

I agree man. They always preach not to bend wires like that and then they do that at the factory 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’m wondering if this one got to be this bad because it’s a 23.5 model and the wires work hardened. I don’t understand why they even thought that was needed. Lol

Yes and no. Same part of the bike, different physical causes. While I firmly believe the zip tie caused both bike’s problems, this had broken wires and his had damaged pins from the tension.

Don't forget about the EITMS Engine Temperature Management feature that shuts the rear cylinder off under certain circumstances. While flashing my 24 today, we turned off that feature in the ECM. I've never seen it happen even on super hot days last Summer, but then again my 24 never gets super hot like my Rushmore bikes did. If you don't know EITMS exists, it may shake you to the core when your rear cyclinder cuts out at a red light.

This guy explains it.

This didn't apply to me when I read it back in April, but my brain was saying...."isn't there a zip tie that @crazy4ink told everyone to cut by the coil"? I couldn't remember the title or if he actually started the thread so it took me a bit to find.

Glad I did because mine was bent beyond 90 degrees. lol Posting so this will get brought back up in the threads again for all the new bike owners.

I cut mine over the winter when @crazy4ink posted this notice. Last week my bike started cutting to one cylinder intermittently and throwing a code for the front coil (P2300 -- Ignition Coil Driver Low/Open - Front). My dealership tested and found the coil to be on its way out. They ordered a new one and my bike has been running great again since.

Had my '24 limp on one cylinder this past weekend, threw up the yellow check engine light. Shut her down, yet the light remained. Checked for codes, none listed. Decided to ride it to my local HD dealer, she ran like normal all the way there. Got the service manager scratching his head....then out of nowhere the light goes out. All is well, but still drove me nuts as to why it went limp.

Now, it was blistering hot, 96+ here in east TN that day, and it happened about 10 minutes after a quick stop at a gas station. Bad gas? EITMS? I had no idea till I saw this post. I'll check that coil zip tie as soon as I get home today. You guys rock, and typically know more than techs at HD. Keep up the great work.

Got to see this first hand the other day on a CVO. I cut the zip tie off and disconnected the harness so I could straighten the wires out. I then reintroduced a curve into the harness that was more gradual and the harness is closer to the heads but not anywhere near touching. I'm pretty confident you'll be fine.

Whelpppppppp....I think this got me today. I clipped the zip tie a couple weeks ago after having the bike for only a month. 117 miles from the house, I'm deep in the carpool lane, 2000 miles behind me, day 7 of a road trip and I start feeling the bike lugging. Change in sound. Feeling that I can't really explain. Rough vibration. Slow acceleration. Veered it all the way from the left lane to the far right (4 lanes of Nashville rush hour traffic) and about 3-5 miles of limping it to a known gas station. I wasn't going to break down on the side of the interstate again. I'm not going to say anything about one dealership and how helpful they were. Called Nick at Moonshine though as I was about 10 miles away from them. He started asking around and no one could break free so I called HOG roadside assistance. Had a tow truck in front of me within 45 minutes of calling and the bike loaded in route to Moonshine.

They told me that they have been calling in at least 2-3 of these a week. Said it was the wiring. Texted @crazy4ink and his exact words "I believe someone that looked like me told you to cut that zip tie." I responded in kind, I did but I didn't chase the wiring to check to see if the damage was done. Now the bike is sitting in Franklin, TN while I'm home unable to complete my first road trip on the new bike. I feel like a failure.:ROFLMAO:

Does HOG cover rental car expenses? Asking for a friend. lol

I’m so glad I did this when I first got mine. My harness was jacked up pretty good when I got it. Snipped it and smoothed it out. Checked the wires and pins/plug and didn’t see anything out of the ordinary but you never know

I cut the zip tie months ago when DannyDaPorkchop told me about it and the wires appear to be undamaged. At 15,000 miles I assume I would have already had an issue if there was damage? This should definitely be a recall but I have little hope of that when they are still installing this damn zip tie in production!!!

Thanks for the tip, just went and checked my new 25 Road glide and sure enough, coil lead was folded tight and zip tied. I cut it and relaxed the fold into a gentle loop and it sits nicely between the cylinders. A side note, I happened to see the shader valve cap on the fuel line didn’t look right…it was barely on as someone at the factory or the dealer almost cross threaded the plastic cap and I guess since it wouldn’t easily turn more they thought it was on. No big deal, just a plastic screw on cap but this new bike was expensive enough, I expect perfection!

Confirmed that I have at least one broken wire from the zip tie. There also appears to be a code that keeps popping up that they are investigating. My service advisor was out of the office yesterday when I called so I need to talk with him to get the full skinny.

Note, I cut the zip tie on mine at probably 500 miles and it didn't show up as a problem until close to 4000 miles. If you cut the tie already, you may want to slide the wiring cover back and investigate the integrity of the wires before you get stranded. I got pretty lucky with where mine happened.
