Hey everyone. Just found this issue after getting my ass kicked by a cylinder randomly dropping out on a bike with no codes showing.

This is the factory coil wiring. It’s
retained with a Christmas tree zip tie and then folded back on itself and zip tied again. Bike was randomly dropping a cylinder with no codes. Thought it was in my tune, kept checking, wasn’t finding anything. Happened to push on this plug while the bike was running (thinking I didn’t have it snapped on) and both cylinders started firing, let go and a cylinder dropped out. Found this when I pulled it apart…

Three of the 4 coil wires broken. So, I recommend if you have a 23.5-up center cooled touring bike, you cut the bottom zip tie that is folding the wires back over. Just passing this along to hopefully help others.

My 25 with 2400 miles is at the dealership for going into limp mode. Trailered it there both times and somehow putting it in transport mode clears the code. As soon at I backed it out the trailer to drive it up to service the lights were out and ran fine, for 30 miles or so. Been there since July 2, hopefully they get to it soon.

Man, I’m going through this now…the hard way. Bought a Road Glide three weeks ago, got the 1k service done and headed from NY to Lexington, OH for AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. It ran fine for the first 500 miles of the trip. Then, in heavy traffic on I-71, it drops a cylinder and check engine light came on. Damn lucky I wasn’t run over! I got off the road, shut it off and fired it up again. The check engine light stayed on but it ran ok for a bit then dropped a cylinder again. I got to my destination, cleared the codes and the next morning it ran fine for about thirty miles, then same issue. An HD dealer near Columbus picked up the bike and worked on it but can’t find what’s wrong. So now I have to rent a truck to take my three week old bike back to NY. What a costly disappointment!

Finally got mine back from the dealer today. Tech services said it was either the right hand control module or ecm. The module was a week out and I asked if they could have the ecm on hand in case the module didn’t fix it, they said they did have one already in stock. Dealer put 40 miles and no symptoms
Trailered it an hour home and took it for a spin and lights came on within 3 miles. They were nice enough to offer to pick it up from my house but used the ecm I asked to have on hand on another bike with the same symptoms so now I have to wait another week for the part. Not happy loosing the month of July on a new bike.

Dealerships are great aren't they.

Here’s the most recent update. Home dealer had the bike last Tuesday, worked on it and claims the wires and connector powering the coil were bad. Waited several days for parts and got the bike back yesterday (Saturday). I called Harley Customer Care myself because I was not sure they were given the entire story on how dangerous this was. I took it out early this morning and it ran rough on startup, rode less than three miles and it threw another code with the yellow triangle showing on the dash for P069300. Parked it and reached out to the dealer yet again. They are graciously going to let me bring it in Tuesday morning when they are open again. This is ridiculous, and another call to Customer Service is in order.

@crazy4ink are ya'll seeing a lot of the actual breaks like mine coming in? The guys at Moonshine said they are seeing a 2-6 a month coming into their shop with this issue and they have been submitting all of them up to HD in hopes of a recall/bulletin. Just wondering if you all are seeing similar numbers.

I also wonder what the threshold/criteria is for one to be issued by them or to change that process in the assembly removing the zip tie. I look frequently at the bikes on the showroom floor as they come in and all are still being tied like that.

We’re seeing at least 3 a month. We cut the lower zip tie (and I cut the higher Christmas tree one) when we’re doing initial setups after delivery. One of the other techs had one with 3 broken wires yesterday.

I had this happen to my brand new RG on a crowded interstate highway, and I nearly got run over when it dropped a cylinder. The bike ultimately left me stranded 600 miles from home. The local dealer in OH said it was the harness and I had to truck the bike home. Woodstock HDs fix was to hack out some wires and solder in new ones. How about replacing the sub harness like they should? And, they never reimbursed me for the rental truck as they said they would. Great customer service! No wonder they are in trouble. It’s not like this was an unknown issue.

He does a great job explaining this issue. I went into limp mode only once, cut that zip tie, checked all my connections. No issue since, other than my battery not holding 12+ volts like it used to.
It happened to me a few times. My dealership did the fix about 1.5-2 months ago. It's good that HD has an official bulletin about it but it would be better as a recall to inspect and then fix as needed. My local dealership hadn't heard of the issue before I had it with my bike, so it took a bit of time. They've had a bunch more come through with the same problem since then, though.

I just had a 3-5 second limp mode hit me again yesterday at a red light. CEL with no codes present. The bike pulled out of it, has been running fine, but what if you're doing 80+ on an interstate? I asked my local service manager if he's heard about this, he just shrugged his shoulders, told me to bring it in if it becomes more consistent. This is going to get someone hurt. HD needs to figure this out now.
