I am gearing up to install Racetech springs and Gold Valve Cartridge Emulators in my forks of my 2015 Road Glide and need a bit of advice.

Do I need a $200 Spring compression tool or is there another way? I'm usually a "buy the right tool for the job" kind of guy, but after what I've spent on the suspension (including G3-S shocks for the rear), not to mention the J&S motorcycle lift, I'm trying not to drop another $200 if it's not necessary.

No you don't need a spring compression tool. You will need a fork tube holder for the vise and the fork seal installation tool. That will make things a lot easier for doing the job but no need for a spring compressor. I have installed fork seals with a piece of PVC pipe split length wise but I prefer the actual tool made to do the job.

I can't agree that you don't need a fork spring tool. Especially with emulators and custom springs, where you might have to yank the caps a few times to tune the valving and change the preload on the springs.

This is what I use.



And I use split seal drivers from Motion Pro. You can seat the seal without a driver, but for replacing the upper bushings the driver is almost a must have. I would highly recommend that you shim any play out of the bushings.

As for the bench clamp or vice adapter, I don't use them. I find it easier to just sit on a low stool and work with the fork between my knees. But that's probably more about habit than ergonomics.

I am doing 3 assemblies today

I went to Home Depot and purchased a 2' piece of appropriate size PVC. Turned down the OD to fit inside of the slider (in this case a 49mm fork). Yes, you need a driver for both the top bushing and the spacer seal. You will also need to use it on the oil seal.

I use Soft Jaws and an electric impact gun to remove the fork cap. Putting your hand around the socket and fork cap and the other hand around and supporting the impact gun. Always push down slightly on the impact gun and watch out when the fork cap reaches the end of the threads and catch it with your other hand that encapsulates the socket & fork cap.

Replace the fork cap. Depending if I am replacing the fork cap on the fork and it is not a cartridge system, I push down on the impact gun and the extra weight and the socket really helps to push down on the spring. Turn very slowly and make sure you do not cross thread the fork cap and fork tube which is really hard to do. Pulsate the impact gun using low torque. Do not, under any circumstances, tighten the fork cap onto the fork tube, use a torque wrench, breaker bar, or ratchet. I have a DIY video with Amy instructing how to properly clean and R&R a fork on my site. I have never felt the need to ever use all of these other tools mentioned above. I believe my job qualifies me to offer advice here on this subject. I have the Race Tech 43mm split driver and hate it compared to the $3.00 Home Depot PVC driver but when doing inverted forks you can not use PVC and need a split driver.

That tool was sold by Ron Trock, and unfortunately he died. The story goes that the tool side of his business was sold to the Hamburg Tool company. And that's were it ends. No idea as to what became of the tools. There are a few still around, but for the most part, you can't find them. It's a shame, because he had patents on some real cant do without tools for working on Harley's.

Last I heard the son, Ron Jr. was still running the repair shop. You might give him a call and see if he can point you to someplace that might still have one (847) 683-4010

Hey Michigander, did you ever install the RaceTech springs and gold valves. If so what are your impressions compared to the stock front end.
