Hello All,
Been a lurker for some time while I was selling my Victory Vegas. Since I have done so I have my sights on a private sell 2010 black denim RG. The bike has 2800 miles and a firm asking price of $17,500. No ABS, no cruise, no aftermarket anything other than 16" wild 1 chubby apes with internal wiring.
My question is how difficult and finacially unappealing is it going to be to remove the apes and go to Heritage style bars part#55864-09 and add cruise control? I dont really like the style of 16" apes but the guy selling the bike no longer has the stock bars or wiring.
Any info will be greatly appreciated. Can't wait to be an RG owner and a forum contributor instead of a lurker.

Have you rode a bike with 16" apes? If not, give it a try before you make up your mind and spend money on it. 9 out of 10 people I know, will take the apes over anything else after some seat time behind a set.

I would have to agree with chain. Get some seat time before you pull the trigger on heritage bars. It's free to ride with the ones that are coming with the bike.

I know you didn't ask this but $17.5 for used, fairly stock, no frills 2010 is a great deal - for HIM and not so much for you. Especially when the only mod is one you don't like. I've seen brand new 2010s with ABS go for that price from dealers. Personally, I'd look around - you can find better deals. (ABS is a must have, IMO)

That said, it'd be a lot easier (and cheaper) going from Apes to Heritage Style bars than the other way around if you're ok with external wiring. Cruise kit is about $300 and Heritage bars are $80 (that's retail - you can find better prices)

Not sure I've seen a RG with 16in Chubbies but I think they'd look pretty tall and a bit over the top. Everyone has different tastes, of course. Then again, I'm still running stock bars (hope to rectify that soon), so what do I know ...

I do agree with the others, though. If you make the purchase give the 16 inchers some seat time before you make the swap. Won't cost you a dime and they just might grow on you.

I havent been behind a set of apes before and am sure that it would only take a ride or two to make me a believer in the comfort I have heard apes provide but this particular set up looks a little out of place on the RG IMO.

HD_Shock actually gave me what I was initially looking for but maybe one or two Johnny Walker Blacks from asking correctly. Is $17.5 a good deal for a used 2010 with no options other than 16" apes that I would convert back to stock or to heritage style bars and what would be a guess on the conversion cost?

Thats a lot of height on those bars. Personally I don't care for them. So I understand your feelings about going another route. That said, I haven't tried them, and can't speak about comfort...so like others have said, nothing to lose to give them a spin and see what the dynamics for you are like.

All the best on your new purchase.
One thing for sure though, you'll love your Glide :)

I have to agree with HD_Shock, I think $17,500 might be a bit high but buying from a private individual in Illinois has a big advantage in the taxes, $25.00 if you buy from a private individual regardless what the sale price is or 6.25% if you buy from a dealer. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I think it's a little much. I just got a 2011 RGC Black denim with 103/ABS/security for about 19500 out the door. I also got 20% off any parts which I took advantage of.

I've decided to pass on this bike. He won't budge on his price and I just cant see me spending another grand to get cruise and the bars and cables replaced. I was at the dealer yesterday and they were down to 21,500 for a 2011 vivid black with cruise and the power pak. Couldn't get them to come down any lower though.
One thing that sucks about living in Washington is the 8.2 percent tax I have to pay. I don't think it matters if it a private seller or dealer.

In Ca when you do private party sales you declare the purchase price (thus the tax) when you turn in the registration. You can't be foolish and declare a $100 purchase price, but something much lower can be done to save a few bucks as long as the seller agrees to document the price. Private sellers have a really hard time finding people with cash or putting a financing deal together, so you tend to get much better prices from them. If they aren't dealing wait em out or find someone who is ready. Dealers can put financing together so they tend to sell at a higher price. Having said all of that 17.5 to 18.5 would be what I would expect to see at a dealer for a used 09 or 10 around here since RGs are popular. Not sure about Washington, but whatever a dealer asks for on a used bike there is plenty room to deal. They don't pay a lot for used bikes unless they bought it at auction.
