So I'm banging my way across a few states on the way home from Sturgis and as soon as I get into Indiana my bike starts running rough and the check engine light comes on for a second or two before smoothing out when I get on the gas. Thought I just got some bad gas in Joliet. Added some Lucas carb cleaner and ran a tank through it on the way to Ohio. Got worse and worsen to the point I called him to bite down HD Youngstown. They take me right in and 3 dudes worked on it for almost 3 hours They eventually get it to run ok after they remove the tuner. Best part is they only charge me $15 for two new plugs and a screw. Couldn't be more impressed with their hospitality and service. They knew I was only passing through.

Anyhow, it runs fine without the tuner so I'm guessing that narrows it down. i'll have to call them when I get home and see if they'll cover it under warranty but it looks like I might be looking for a new tuner.

Not sure. It gets power from the fuel injector harness. Only has a ground wire to the battery. I'm home now so I'll mess with it a bit

I think I'm going to try something different though. I got 3 years out of the tuner, and it was only $150.

Well, I took a look at the unit and found a little break in the wire insulation on the rear injector harness



I think I'm going to put it back on and see if that was the problem. The wire itself isn't broken but they may have been grounding out off the bottom of the tank or something. I soldered in the new section of wire and shrink sealed it. I'm also going to double wrap all of that wire for a little extra protection.

I actually bought this just over two years ago, so it's two months out of warranty. And the wire problem isn't a warranty issue anyhow. If it works I'll continue to run it while I explore other options. I might do cams over the winter so maybe I'll look at a more tunable solution then.

Well I hope you found your problem and its the simple fix you did. Let us know the results. Sometimes those wires grounding do damage to the electronics (hope not in your case)

I tidied up the wiring a bit


Put it back on the bike and it runs just fine. Used some of the recent knowledge I've gained researching EFI tuning to adjust the AFR on the low end and got rid of some of the decel pop as well. Pretty chuffed with myself at that point.

Then I decided to go the extra mile and get rid of the quick twist connector that ties into the throttle position sensor wire. Crimped and heat sealed some connectors and put in a proper insulated spade disconnect. But now I have no throttle. The bike starts and idles fine though, and revved OK when I had the quick twist attached. Must have missed a connection somewhere. Probably crimped down jacket. Back to square one on that. I might go ahead and solder in an insulated connection

OK. All sorted now. I tried to take the quick way out using the crimp connectors. Must have slid the insulation in too far on one of them and crimped that.

Went ahead and soldered in a new section of wire where the quick twist had been connected and chewed up the coating. Added a new section that connects to the wire from the tuner with an insulated spade fitting. The little zip tie is there to reinforce the added wire and take pressure off the Y.


All the wiring is tidied up now and protected from exposure and wear. No reason the tuner shouldn't keep going for a while longer now.

Well, not sure where I stand with this thing now. Took a ride to Providence on Saturday, by the time I got down there the idle was a little rough and I could hear a little knock when I went to pull away from a stop, almost like it bogged the little bit. Seemed to be running hotter too, although it wasn't that hot out and I wasn't in any kind of heavy traffic. I might pull it off again, put on the oxygen sensors and see how it does. Just to isolate the issue or at least isolate the tuner as the problem. Maybe that wire grounding out did screw with it a little bit. I'll also call Fuel Moto and see if they can send me a refreshed map.
