Ok, I am having an intermittent issue with a couple of gauge lights. While riding, occasionally the transmission light and the battery light will turn on. The Nike keeps running ok, I don't notice any difference, but the lights are on. Then when I got home yesterday, I turned the bike off, and waited 10 seconds and turned it back on, the lights were in and would not go off, yet the bike would still start. Then I went out about two hours later, turned on, started and rode and they never came back on.

What gives? Is it the battery? Any help would be appreciated.

What transmission light are you referring too?? The only light that is connected to the trans is the 6th gear light, there is no trouble light for the trans.
There is a engine light and a battery light, if the battery light goes on it mean there is a problem with the charging system if the engine light goes on then there is a DTC code.
If the 6th gear light goes on when you are not in 6th gear then you may have a speed sensor problem and you will need to pull the speed sensor and clean it or replace it.
Check for DTC codes there is a sticky in the troubleshooting section that tell you how to check for DTC's.

Sorry, it was the engine light. I messed up. I will check to see if I can find the sticky about checking the codes.

Would the charging system be having intermittent problems, or should it be constant once it starts happening?

Charging problems can be intermittent, if that is the problem it probably is the voltage regulator.
What year is your bike?

There is a known issue with voltage regulators on 2012 bikes. When the lights are off, take a look at your volt meter and take note of where it runs while riding, both idling and at road speed.
If and when the lights come back on, check the volt meter again.

Oh my hell... so funny. I was just about to post a thread for the same question.

I changed my oil a couple weeks ago, and shortly after the battery and check engine light came on while I was riding. Came home and the battery was dead. I put a charger on it and is said the "alternator" wasn't working. I noticed my voltage was down around 10 when I got home.

I wondered if oil had gotten into a connector beneath the filter, so I cleaned it and everything seemed to work fine.

A couple weeks later, the lights came on again and my voltage dropped at the beginning of a ride. The lights went off about two minutes in.

It happened again today.

The volts on my dash ride about 15-16 I've noticed. I read the service manual, but it says it expired June of last year. Damn. Oh well, at least I have an idea of what might be going on!

Ride Safe!!

If your volts were around 15 or 16 and lights went off, they may have gone off as in the bulbs blew....would check bulbs and I can almost guarantee it is your VR.

There were a rash of these right after the 2012's came out. I had to have my VR replaced. Dealership replaced it under warranty before the Service Bulletin came out. I haven't had any issues since then.

Good Luck with yours, but it sounds like the same exact issue.

Dealership replaced my VR to not long after I got the bike, I went in and when they checked the vin they scheduled me in, never had any problems with it.
