So unless you've been under a rock or away from the interwebs for awhile, Shark Week VI is going to be in Canada in August 2016.

Now I know this gives you all lots of time but better to get on this one item as early as possible. Even if you register to attend and then can't you will have the document that lets you travel internationally by air, ground or sea.

APPLY FOR YOUR PASSPORT NOW!!! Here is the link.

https://pptform.state.gov/

This link is also provided on the swvi-canada.org website on the FAQ link. Please check out the site at your earliest convenience to see what we have in store for your visit to Canada.

The organizing committee for SWVI in Canada......see you up here eh!

Some States offer an enhanced driver license (EDL) and if you don't want a passport the enhanced driver license will allow you to travel to Canada and Mexico without a passport. Check with your state and see if they offer the EDL and if it will work for you. The EDL cost less than a passport and it is good until your DL needs to be renewed.
A EDL is only good for ground travel and it is not good if you fly into Canada or Mexico.
If you plan to take trips to other countries besides Canada or Mexico in the future then the passport is the best option.

States the currently offer EDL are
Michigan
New York
Washington
Vermont

States that are considering EDL are
Arizona
Idaho
Maine
Minnesota
New Hampshire
New Mexico
North Dakota
Texas

Don't forget an insurance card. I called my company, Foremost, and asked them if I was covered for a trip to Canada. They told me yes, but that I was required to carry an identification card from the company stating I am covered ... in other words, the same type of card most US states require.
They mailed me one right away, good until my renewal date.
It says "Canada Non-Resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card".

You may want to check with your medical insurance carrier too, you may not have medical insurance in Canada unless you pay for additional coverage.
Since you are not a Canadian citizen you may not be eligible for cost free health care if you have a medical emergency or crash the bike and need medical attention.
You may need medical coverage on your motorcycle insurance policy to cover medical cost if you crash the bike.

I use this for convenience (always carrying my license so I don't have to think about passport)

It is also cheaper than a passport (at least in NY).

This is a good point and will be added to the website as well.

I buy a yearly medical insurance policy that covers myself and my immediate family members through the Alberta Motor Association; your AAA equivalent in the U.S. should be able to offer a similar type of policy. My policy is good for the whole year but limits my stay to only 30 days at a time in the U.S. The policy costs me about 180.00 Canadian to cover myself, my wife, daughter and son.

Health Insurance - Traveling to Canada

You would be wise to get a supplemental Travel Health Insurance. Also realize that in the event of an emergency that you may still have to pay cost upfront and then file a claim even if you have travel insurance. It depends on the provider. If your coverage is Medicare or Medicaid you have no health insurance outside the U.S. There are exceptions but considering what we are doing here, you will not be covered. Also, consider having coverage for evacuation in the event of a medical emergency. This will not be covered. I have a cousin who was out of the country and had a major medical emergency and had purchased the needed insurance ahead of time. Thank goodness he did because he likely would have died.

Please do your own homework and make certain you are covered. Lots of things happen on motorcycles. We all know what happened to Donna and Richard at Shark Week 2015. Trip insurance because of a totaled motorcycle would be a good thing. I did some research for travel/health insurance and went with the top listed providers and found a range in cost from 80 to 200 dollars for two weeks of coverage. Depends on your age and what coverage you need/desire. preexisting conditions and age may change the cost.

This is what I found... DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK!

Passport Cost
Passport cards - 55 (all you need to get into or out of Canada)
Passport book 135

Canada will be great to see and ride but as you can see there are many things to consider above and beyond gas, food and hotel bills.

Best regards,
HUTMO
