Went on a ride yesterday to benefit Operation Wounded Warrior. One group left from a dealer near Phoenix, another from one in Tucson. Around 600 or 700 bikes converged on the small town of Sacaton. This is the hometown of one of the six men (Ira Hayes) in the iconic photo of the flag raising on Iwo Jima. It's the 67th anniversary of that WWII event, and there was a parade.

The photo below was our escort (AH-64A) from Sacaton to Casa Grande, the site of the rally. BBQ and music...

A friend behind me snapped this pic of one of the Apaches. It is hovering above the road where the route makes a turn to the right. Pretty cool.
I used to work at the plant where these big birds are built. Pretty amazing aircraft.

Well, hopefully they learned for next year. They seriously underestimated the attendance. It was well advertised, but there was no online registration - just print out a form and take it to one of the two dealerships. No discount for early registration.
At the Chandler dealership they had 80 advance registrations - and about 400 (maybe more) showed up. They had one guy doing registrations, and he only had 150 wristbands (for BBQ and beer).
The route and KU times changed a few times. The route wasn't conducive for a group that size. No blocking at signals.

They wanted to have the Apaches on the ground at the rally site for a static display, but the city wouldn't give them a permit.

But, I still had a good time. And it was for a great cause. Like I say, hope they learned for next year.

You guys are VERY fortuneate to0 have the helo participation. For 5 yrs I ran a charity for SEALS and Aviators killed in AFG. We raised over $80k for the affected children. We never were able to even get a "static" display of a helo. Such is the way of bureaucracies -- anyway - glad u enjoyed it -- DOOF
